Default post-workout shakes

This is one of these questions I know I'm going to smack my forehead about later. But does the post-workout shake have to be, well, a shake? I workout during my lunch hour and then like to eat my lunch at my office. Can I just eat my lunch right after my workout, or must I have a protein shake? Is it really important to be getting my recovery nutrition in liquid form?

I would add, just make sure you get a lot of protein in that meal, and don't forget that your total calories for a workout day should be higher than your non-workout day. In the book, he counts the PW shake as an "extra" snack, so 6 meals. If you're eating lunch for your PW nutrition, make sure you get those extra calories in somewhere.

The other day I worked out right after work, but instead of rushing around to make dinner like I usually do, I ate two eggs and then I showered and had dinner more casually an hour or two later. Is that okay or do I really have to get my 20+ grams of protein immediately?

By the way, I'm not drinking protein shakes, I don't want to pay for them and I'd rather get my protein from more natural sources. But that's just me.

Good advice. Fortunately, I'm really good at getting a lot of calories, perhaps too good.

I wasn't aware that it's any specific amount of protein you want to shove in immediately post workout, just "some" protein. Eggs are probably fine, I think. I also think it's important to get a lot of protein "around" your workouts in general, so morning of, day after, night of, etc. not necessarily immediately.

There are places where you can get exact amounts of protein and carb for after a workout, but in most cases "get some protein and carbs" is adequate.

The reason many use shakes is that the protein is available to the body very quickly - eggs and many other sources take longer to digest.
