I finished NROL4W for the second time. I might still be cowering on the fringes of the gym floor without the help and encouragement of the posters here. (A big tip-of-the-hat to Miss Jane for always being there.)
I feel good. I feel strong. I can deadlift over 100 lbs.
Just for laughs, here's my very first post on this site on 6/5/2008:
"Going from "Barbie weights" to an empty (45-lb.) bar isn't as easy as it sounds. I'm scared to death that I'm going to hurt my back.
The NROL makes it sound like it's easy to hurt your back if your posture isn't perfect. The NROL4W just kind of glosses over saying, "You must maintain the natural arch in your lower back, and the heavier the weight you lift off the floor, the harder it is for those muscles to protect your spine. (Remember, "harder" is better when it comes to improving your body in appearance and function.)
My back was achy after my last workout of deadlifts, but not hurting. I'll be deadlifting again this afternoon and, as I said before, I'm a little afraid!"
Oh my goodness. What a difference a year makes. I'm still going to need you all, as I am starting NROL tonight. It's nice to know that I'm in good company.
Wow. I'm impressed that you made it through twice, and I've been lifting randomly for over 5 years and am just starting the 4W program, and it's pretty killer. I'm deadlifting 65 pounds, and squatting 75, and I thought I was doing good, now I know better, ha ha. I can only hope to be deadlifting 100 pounds !!!!!
Now, when you say you are starting NROL, do you mean the one for men?
oh, it's not? I hadn't realized it. I came across the NROL4W by chance, and have seen only fleeting references to the NROL, and since they are often shown side by side and the other has a male model on it, I guess I just assumed. So I'm dumb, forgive me.
yer not "dumb" just pointing it out. They're really both totally … gender neutral… really. The second one wasn't even supposed to be named originally as some kind of sequel.

Congratulations! I'm just at the end of Stage One and it's great to see how other people have got on with the programme, especially the second time! Did you still find it fun to do the second time? I think I plan on doing NROL after this too. It's already on my birthday list!
On getting encouragement from other posters here, sometimes when I was struggling through the jackknifes, I'd imagine people from here cheering me on! Sounds strange but I know that you have all been there and that you would cheer me on and encourage me if you were actually there.

woo hoo! thanks for the post. 100 lbs is something to aspire to, for sure. I confess, I look at pics of women oly lifters for further inspiration, but hearing these posts from NROL4W regs is more down to earth - attainable - than seeing a career lifter succeed.
I want to be able to deadlift half my body weight by the time I'm through NROL4W (the first time) Oh yeah, and do a proper push up from the floor.
Then I think my sweetie & I should go into the bush and single-trip portage a 5 day load, with a solo canoe each.
I love how lifting really opens the possibilities!
thanks for the encouragement everybody, it's great that there are several of us that are just starting and lots of people who are farther along cheering us on and giving helpful hints.
A big thank-you to whoever recommended fitday.com to figure out the nutrition and ratios. I'm finding it very helpful - i used to put in everything on the food labels in Excel but it wasn't telling me the ratios, and where my nutrient RDA gaps were. For example, I have epilepsy and my seizure medication strips out the calcium from my bones, causing my bone density to go down. I was glad to find out that I'm eating more than 100% of my RDA of calcium (not including multivitamin) but I need to watch my intake of Vitamin D. My calorie intake and my ratio of C/P/F is right on! Yay!
P.S. Double-yay! I had a bone density scan yesterday and my doctor just called to say it's normal! I've been weight-lifting since August 2007 but I've been taking seizure medications for 24 years, so I'm really relieved.
P.P.S. From last week to this a.m. - down 1 pound, fat% down 2.5%! w00t!
