Default Move Over Lou...

I'm a better man than you! (and, I have more hair )

I did it. I finished the entire NROL4W program. I am so thrilled! I even did Stage 7 twice (just b/c he challenges us to do so)...and Stage 7 was no picnic.

I have been asked on WeightWatchers boards to write a little retrospective on my experience with the program so here goes.

I came to heavy lifting (what I now think of as "real lifting") via the WW boards. NROL4W is highly recommended over there for strength training. At the time I was in losing mode, had lost about 15 lbs already, and was doing cardio and "the machines." Because the weight machines are literally across the aisle from the free weights at the gym, I was curious about free weights, but trepidatious. My gym is not hard core, but all the equipment over there was foreign to me, and there are no written instructions on the squat racks or dumbells as there are on the Cybex machines.

In the beginning I took a deep breath and had to force myself to go over there. I started NR on 10/27/08. I had 2 free training sessions that had come with my membership that I'd never used. I used one at the onset of stage 1, and one later on when I moved from fixed barbells to the oly bar with plates. Interestingly, the book had taught me just about as much about doing the exercises as these particular trainers seemed to know, but I needed the security of having them there the first time I used the equipment.

What were, physically, the hardest things about this program? Well, my knees protested squats and lunges. I had to start with very low weights with those, 20lbs on the BB squats, 30lbs for the DLs. I modified the lunges, doing one leg at a time, rather than alternating, until the wobbliness stopped. I was doing some PT for my knees initially as well. My knees have improved a lot, but I don't think it had much to do with PT, I think it was NR. Whereas last spring walking 2 miles would've made it difficult for me to get down into a chair or descend stairs the next day, now I can jog at least 2 miles with no pain. BTW, I ended the program using 70lb on the BB squats and 100lb on the DL.

The body weight matrix was a wake up. Thought I was in good cardiovascular shape until that. It was just awful. But once I actually managed to make myself do it the second time, my times started to improve. Never came to enjoy it, but did appreciate the its value.

Stage 7. Another rude awakening. It didn't look hard on paper. But it was killer. I had to hold the railing to get down the steps after the first w/o and was sore for days after. Damn.

Overall, yes, I've gained muscle and lost fat. About 15 lbs of fat since starting NR. My body is very different. I had always been a pear. But now I am balanced, have more substantial arms and shoulders. I've lost cellulite and am shaplier and sturdier all over. My cardio fitness, and I did alter cardio workouts with lifting right along, has improved right along the way with strength. Balance and posture has improved, I think, maybe b/c of increased back-body and core muscle. Even my grip strength has improved. It had to, in order for me to hold onto those 25lb DBs. Maybe best, I am comfortable in the weight room. I sometimes have to bite my tongue to keep from offering advice to some of the other lifters there. I want to tell the women, "you can lift more than that." Or the guys, "how about adding some squats to your routine?"

I did not meet all my goals. I wanted to DL my body weight and fell 30 lb short of that. I wanted to do one chin-up and can't as yet do that either. Yet. And in a way I'm really glad to still have these goals to strive towards.

Where now? I don't know yet. I'm thinking NROL original. It'll be just different enough to be interesting. I'm also very interested in body weight work. But right now I'm going to take that 2 week rest from lifting that Lou recommends once a year. If I can stand it.

I want to thank everyone here for answering my newbie questions and for the encouragement and support. You guys are fantastic!

Congratulations! As someone who is over halfway through Stage One, with the end seeming so far away, it's great to hear from someone who has just finished the programme. You should be very proud of yourself for lasting the course. I can't wait to write my own version of this post around November time!

Good luck with whatever you choose to do next!

Congratulations! It is really helpful to read about your experiences, and to see how you have come through the program. I too have had knee problems, gone through PT, etc., then just learned to live with the pain if I wanted to continue running. I am now at the point where I can run with just some swelling and achiness afterward, which I fully attribute to re-balancing my muscles through NR (I am currently in stage 3). Best of luck to you in whatever program you chose next!

Wow! Great job! Enjoy your two weeks off, as hard as it is to stay away from the gym once you get into it!

Congratulations on finishing. That is an accomplishment!

I finished New Rules for women a while ago, and as I told Lou personally, it revolutionized my body. I have never, ever, ever, ever been athletic in my life and I am now being told that I look like an athlete. My posture problems, which have bothered me for 20 years with neck and lower back pain, are gone. Something magical happened for me in that program, and I will be forever grateful to Lou and Alwyn for coming out with it.

I'm now doing NROL Fat loss, although I don't have much left to lose...overall, I've lost 40 pounds since starting NROL4W (50 total since I started working out) but I have gained an athlete's body. Best of all, when I diet I actually lose weight--I feel in control of my body for the first time in my life.

I just can't say enough about the program. If you're thinking about doing it,let me assure you that it is totally worth it. Even the body weight matrix. : )

Thanks so much, Girls. Elisabeth, I think I am going to order NROL today. I've previewed it from the library. I am not really after fat loss at this point either, or muscle gains. I primarily want more strength and maintenance of muscle. There is one program I remember (of the personalized programs outlined for the fictional "characters" in the book) that had only one fat loss stage in it. I'll probably follow that one.

Okay, I'm a newbie to this thread post stuff. But here goes- I also wanted to congratulate you on your accomplishment. I was introduced to NROL4W in June of 2008. It took me 6months to complete. I liked it so much I decided to do it again and I'm finishing stage 5 this week. It's enjoyable to read the details of your experience. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work.

You'll love NROL. The information is not a repeat at all of the women's book, they are very complimentary. I think I'm doing strength next--I'm in the middle of fat loss II but I will be all done with fat loss very soon.

Dawn: You're also hotter than Lou too. Congrats on finishing NROLFW.

Elisabeth: I think the main difference between the two books is the audience to which the book is pitched. As in, using male pronouns in NROL, and female in NROLFW. I'm sure that there is some gender specific info in either, but for the most part either gender can use either book and be successful.

Congrats! Stage 7 defeated me. I plan to go back to it when much lighter, but the high reps just killed my knees. As I say that I'm doing NROL Break-in at the moment, which is also 15-reps.

Tom, you have no idea how much that means to a 40-something in the midst of an early mid-life crisis! Thanks...I'll take it. Lou's not bad after all.

Anne, I have had a set back with my knees in the past few days. It wasn't lifting and it wasn't running. It was, as far as I can tell, gardening. Too much time kneeling down, even on a kneeler. go figure.

What you need to do is make a video of the gardening, set it to a heavy metal/thrash metal soundtrack and post it in youtube as hardcore gardening workout.

I really hurt one knee at my tax accountant's place. I guess I was sitting rather tensley and awkwardly and didn't notice the strain. I was limping for days.

That's a great success story!
I've had the book for about a month, reading it on and off, and I'm going to finally start the program tonight. I'm really looking forward to seeing results!
