I can only see the comments and a picture of the 12 year old boy that I guess is suppose to be the trainer. The comments are hilarious, but I wish I could see the video. Did they remove the video out of embarrassment?
RIP is great, of course. The 4th link to so-called 'perfect squat' shows they don't know squat! But the 3rd one (from PACEfit) have been shot from a higher angle...thus making it look like he doesn't go low enough. I wish they shot the side view too. What I find concerning about the PACE model is he keeps shifting his feet while performing the movement. I understand there's not enough weight to hurt him, but still..demonstration should be better than that.
I'm not quite sure why Alwyn didn't include these.
Wow! Nice... ::snort::
We used to teach figure-8's and other hip/pelvic movements on the ball for incontinence patients who were learning how not to pee themselves... Ironically, watching that model made me laugh and I risked peeing myself...
I'm showing my ignorance here, but this is news to me. Squats are really supposed to be that low?? I just tried a few and had trouble getting that far down (further than my thighs parallel to the floor). I actually felt it in my shins a lot. Any suggestions about how to work down that far? Is it just a matter of trying to go a bit lower each time until you get there?

watch the 1st video in the series from Rippetoe (the 2nd link) - see how he has the trainee set their stance and their feet and then squat and press their knees out. Can you do that unweighted? Widen your stance a little or turn your feet out a little more. If you cannot get there, you need to work towards that with low weight. If you aren't getting to parallel (which is the line drawn from the crease of your hip to the patella) you aren't really engaging the hamstrings properly in the movement - and part of their job is to pull on your knee and keep it in a good position.
I just started NROLW last week. I'm really loving it so far and I'm excited to get stronger!
I watched the Rippetoe video. It seems like the general consensus is that you always want to have your toes pointed out and your knees out, rather than keeping them parallel. I'm just confused because Alwyn doesn't say to do squats that way. Any ideas why not? I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing!
You toe out as much as you need/want to… just make sure your knees and toes run in the same line, not that your knees are forward while your toes are out. We all squat a bit different, depending on our flexibility, mobility, strength, and general anatomy.
I have hated Gold's since I went there, probably 18 years ago, looking for a place to work out. My son was a toddler and I had rarely left him with anyone. I asked to see the childcare and asked if the sitters were choking/CPR certified. The guy said to me, "obviously you are not serious about this." I'm still mad about it today and will never consider Gold's!

I've never received such good advice, thanks a million! These vids are great. Rippetoe is ripping! Squats have always intimidated me. No more am I going to the Smith Machine, no more am I going to the Smith Machine, no more am I going to the Smith Machine. I couldn't be happier with NRL4W. It's making me be more honest with my lifting skills.
wow, thanks miss jane for letting me know about this thread, Im definitely not getting low enough in my squats, I will try that on my next A workout, so glad to find these videos while still in stage one before I set up a bad habit!!! And thanks to LisaS for posting this.
btw Newdawn, I really dislike Gold's too... but I'll leave all of that for another thread, Im just glad I found Omni, when I moved I love my new gym!!!

I watched those clips yesterday and looked forward to widening my stance to get a better squat. Last night was Stage 1, Workout A(3). I asked a trainer to spot me and he said my form was 'perfect'.
I wasn't really feeling it in the back of my legs, and he had me adjust my foot position until I was engaging my hamstrings and glutes; not just the quads. Wow, what a difference!
It seems like foot position is really individual. One has to keep adjusting their feet until they can achieve the full depth of the squat and feel the weight in the back of the legs, to be able to push up from the heels; not the toes.
Lisa, I saw it was a BB.com video and went to check the exercise videos on the site. It's definitely there in the list for quadriceps. If you scroll down further, they have Barbell Squats and that video uses the same depth.
