Default Push Ups

Hi - anyone have any suggestions about push-ups? I am on Stage 4, am doing fairly well with my workouts. I'm increasing my weights as often as I can, and I am still challenged by push ups. I am doing the ones where you use a bench on an incline instead of on the floor, and I can do all of my reps, but get tired at the end. This week I tried with my knees on the floor. I want to be able to do a pushup and definitely want to get to the chin ups. I am wondering if there are any suggestions to help me.

I think the only thing is to keep doing them. If you can do all your reps on the bench, then try moving to a step.

When I started it was against my kitchen table, then I moved to the weight bench, and then to an aerobics step, and finally was doing 4-6 on the floor. But now in Stage 7 with the high reps and short rest periods I am doing them on the bench again. But that's because I have to do 20, and only 30 second rest.

Do them on an incline, somewhere adjustable, it's better than on knees. You can then lower the incline as you progress till you're on the floor. The smith machine is good for this, so is a power cage, squat rack, etc. You can start higher than a bench, move to lower than a bench, and hands around a bar can work better for the wrists than on a bench or step or whatnot

The other thing I did when I was getting close is to do some full push-ups and then the rest the way I'd done them last time. As others have said, just keep going lower and lower. You'll get there.

IMO, I wouldn't do the knee version - it's really a different exercise and not going to further your development. I started doing them on the stairs, and then I'd move down one stair for one or two reps, gradually adding more reps on that lower stair, repeat until done!

Can I link to my blog here? Not sure that's okay, but I wrote a whole post on it, for what it's worth...

That's the idea stated above -- doing them on the Smith Machine and progressing lower and lower until reaching the floor.
