I found that the Bulgarian Split Squats really targeted the quads, much more so than any of the lunge variations. My quads were burning. Had to drop the weight from what I was using for lunges, as well.

With the BSS, the TOP of your foot is on the bench and with the static lunge, the BOTTOM of your foot is on the step.

Maybe the book should clarify the difference a little more then?

I thought it was pretty clear, actually. What do you think wasn't said?

It's shown in the accompanying picture and does make the distinction in the description, although I hadn't caught it before either. I was just using a taller bench for the BSS!

You know, I had the same thought so you aren't alone. I did have to read it twice to catch that the BSS had the top of the foot on the bench. It's pretty clear when you read it again, but I suppose a little note in the book to grab your attention tot he difference would have been helpful.
I just did workout B2 on Stage 2. I did three workouts per week in stage 1, but only two per week so far in Stage 2. Circumstances and being pretty sore have cut me back. I'm working out Monday and hope to get three workouts next week, but we'll see how sore I am. Tues and Wed.

I SHOULD have noticed the difference but I'm still glad I asked as I'm keen to make sure my technique is spot on....no doubt as I move up through the programme, I'll have more silly questions to ask which may be obvious to others!!
However, I would rather look stupid by asking than do the exercises incorrectly!

Thanks for your answers everyone

Did a search and happy to see this post. Im about to start stage 2, and also been doing some static reverse lunges with the wii my fitness coach game, and was really having a hard time seeing the difference between lunges, split squats, and is there really a difference (if you are doing a static/pulse thing rather than stepping out each time) between a reverse and regular lunge?
