Default First workout q- squat

Hi!
I'm starting Stage 1 Workout A today... question on the squats. Do they have to be free squats with the bar if that makes sense? Or can the bar be attached to a machine that goes up and down? I have always done squats with two dumbells (held in front of me, arms up, palms in). I tried looking in the book and all that I could find was the picture looked like it was a free bar with weights.

Thanks...

Hmmmm ok, I already did workout A with the smith machine I guess... I do not know if my gym has a squat rack, if it doesn't maybe I will just use dumbells again. I looked at those links a little but didn't see anything on why the smith is bad? (I believe ya just don't know why).... also in answer to pinkgingham I don't post on Shape but do sometimes on calorie-count
