Default Pull-ups

I'm on workout B in Stage 1 and was trying to come up with a way to do the lat pulldown with no gym equipment. So, I decided to give negative pull-ups a try on some monkey bars at the park behind our apartment. I can't even do the negative pull-ups. I simply weigh too much (267 pounds). So, I just used my legs for a bit of help and did the motions of a regular pull-up while keeping as much weight as I could handle off my legs (which isn't a lot!). Will this be good enough for now? I intend to try and lessen the amount of pressure I put on my legs as I go. However, I don't think I'll be able to do a full blown pull-up until I lose some of this weight.

Have you tried the variation where you lie down lift a heavy weight from an overhead arm extended position to vertical? It's pictured in the book with a barbell but perhaps you could use dumbbells instead.

Aha! I didn't look far enough ahead for that variation. I just saw the pull-ups and lat pulldown. That one actually looks doable to me! Thanks a million and I feel silly for not having seen that one.
