Default food confusion

I guess it's probably because I've been brainwashed to eat less, but, I feel like I'm eating too much, but really, probably not eating enough. So so so so so confused and need some clarification to what is written in the book.
I do love the workouts. just finished workout 4B in stage one and am already feeling so much definition in my hamstrings and quads, however, am not seeing so much in my arms and abs....Any ideas what I may doing wrong, or, is this "normal?"

I'm the opposite: feel as if I'm seeing it in my arms & abs but not my legs!

We're all going to lose fat in different patterns. Genetics are lovely...

The first calculation you do in the book should be your maintenance calories--that is, the amount of calories you need to work out and pretty much stay right where you are. They suggest giving it 4 weeks (I think) at maintenance to see if that really is your maintenance (since we're all so different that a formula probably isn't going to be accurate for us all). At the end of the 4 weeks or so, you can start to drop your calories a little bit until you find a good place where you're losing fat but still have plenty of energy for the workouts. (Or, if you're losing too much weight, especially muscle, on the maintenance cals, then you might need to increase your cals a bit.)
