Default Interested in starting program...BUT

I am away for vacation for about 3 months. I am living right by the ocean so cardio is sort of fun by the water. I am staying at a tiny apartment and the owner only has a set of 5pound dumbbells. I am pretty sure my mother has higher weights and a balance ball. I do not want to purchase a barbell...because, well there is no way to carry it home aftwerwards (at least it does not make financial sense.) So this is a long way of saying, is there a way to follow the program with super limited space to store anything, and no real reason to purchase anything? I know, hard. But maybe there is a way. I want to purchase the book also for use when Im back home near my gym but would hesitate to do so right now if I could not start the program w/o equipment. Thanks!

I think if you look into Turbulence Training, you will find a ton of body weight workouts.

Like curltess said, I think bodyweight training might be the way to go for right now. For three months worth of workouts, you would need a pretty wide variety of weights, and a barbell seems almost essential with so many squats and deadlifts.

If you really wanted to do the program right now, perhaps you could find a local gym and work out a temporary membership?

Thanks for the response. I will look into turbulence training. I checked the gym in my area but 1. it is not walking distance (I do not have a car and the bus system is not user friendly), 2. It is more expensive than even in the states (lovely tourist trap). I requested a set of 10 pounders from my mother as well as her balance ball...but I guess that would not be enough? Why would you not do squats with free weights...or even deadlifts? When you say you would need a variety of weights, what does that exactly mean? I suppose I wonder what the essentials are. I can probably get a barbell (what kind?) if absolutely necessary and just give it to my mother for her use w. her own strenght program.

You will QUICKLY outgrow 10 lb dumbbells. Take squats for example. I would imagine that you will very quickly need to be squatting over 50 pounds. It will get quite difficult to hold onto 30 lb dumbbells while squatting. Same for deads. You'll actually need even more for deads (if, like most, you dead more than you squat).

I would say essentials would be dumbbells up to 25 pounds. For instance, I use 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, and 30). You probably won't want to invest in that many. Maybe an adjustable set like Powerblocks?

You will want a barbell. I'd get the 45 lb oly bar with plates. You'll also want a squat rack to use for that bar.

Also, you will need a swiss ball.

^^ and that is probably not feasible at a summer rental for 3 months - esp. if you are out of country.

I agree with the other posters - look for a bodyweight plan to use over the summer and then decide what you want to do when you return.

Default GOOD news

I called the owner of the apartment I am renting and she told me about a gym two blocks away. It is tiny and hidden so there was no way for me to find it. It will definitely work. Yay. Now on to get the book.

Thanks so much for your help. I hope it is Ok to stick around and join in discussions and challenges as I reclaim my bod. A year ago I was on top re: weight and weightlifting. Any time I go back to school (PhD this time) I just let myself go and don't even make time for my own body. I am determined for it to be different this time.

Happens to me too. Never time, always homework, papers, projects. Can't manage to eat right, not always enough sleep, and certainly no time to workout. Or at least, that's what ends up happening, even tho there is plenty of time.
