Hey there,
Since I am a fitness instructor at my gym, Ive recruited about 11 women to join a 12 week challenge with me. Part of that challenge involves some intense strength training, and I want to recommend this program to them.
My question is, can this be done in group setting? We have bars and weights in our group ex studio, but in order to really pump those squats out, wont we really want to use the squat rack? Or can I have them pair up in group of two and alternate and spot one another?
Just trying to figure out if we can make this a team effort or not.......
what do you think?
I think it woudl be difficult. The squat rack is essential for squats and DL's. You will also need the lat pulldown machine, seated row, cable/pulleys (not sure what these are called but you use them for the woodchops) And with the specific rest periods assigned in each stage I think it would be hard in a gorup setting.
I doubt it could be as written and intended. Unless you gurls are out in the the freeweight area and partnered up and switching off stations and whatnot... Which I'm having trouble seeing it working without a LOT of redundant equipment.
Now, if everything was modified to be using dumbbells, maybe. But again, once you outgrow your capacity to use db's you're in trouble. And later on you're doing some pretty low rep stuff, which means some pretty high weight.
I do this with a workout partner sometimes, and in the end, my friend (who isn't strictly following NROLW, just "along for the ride") makes accomodations so I can get my sets in the right order at the right time... It just doesn't work as a group program...
I think NROL type programs are often hard enough for one person to get all the equipment in the right order while observing the appropriate rests, let alone a group.

I think you could come up with several circuits that would work for a group setting. Not NROL, but still good.
Keep in mind that if you do squats in the rack AND do it as part of a superset or circuit, that 12 people will be using that rack for an hour (at least) straight. You might not be popular with the rest of the gym.
Pick exercises that use lighter loads. Maybe you can do them all with those bars in the group x room if you go with moderately higher reps (8-15). Superset with exercises that don't use the bar or use the same weight.
