I usually use the elliptical. For the high intensity minutes I up the resistance to 11 or 12 and speed up. For low intensity I drop the resistance wayyy back and slow down.

OK, so when I get to HIIT, I'm gonna have to check out the stair thingie at the gym. You all make it sound so horribly good for you...

The calorie counts on all those machines are wildly exaggerated. You can assume that the newer and fancier the machine, the more exaggerated will be the calorie counts. I wear a heart rate monitor and the readings on the elliptical will usually be hundreds of calories higher than what my HRM reports. It's a sneaky business.
