Default age

Hello,

My mother is 49 years old, and somewhat overweight. Will the programs in NROLW be beneficial to her, or is there too much risk of injury for someone her age and shape, and with her lack of weight lifting experience?

Thanks

more serious answer:
chronological age - doesn't matter
overweight - doesn't matter
risk - not if she doesn't have medical factors that would cause a problem for ANY/ALL programs

no lifting experience - not a show stopper. she might need you to demo for her if she doesn't know the movements or translate if she doesn't know the lingo - she might need support to keep going when the DOMS hits - but if she manages to get on and off the toilet every day she can squat and if she can squat down to pick up a 3 year old with his arms out she can deadlift (or lift the laundry basket from the floor up onto the counter).

My aunt is well into her fifties, lifts weights several times a week in her home gym with her bodybuilding/younger husband, and is my idol.

Yes, the programs will be beneficial to her. She'll probably lose some fat and lean out a little. But more practically speaking, she's going to gain strength, increase her bone density, increase her flexibility, and probably increase her confidence. 49 is hardly old. But as she gets older, all those things are going to help her keep her quality of life and mobility as people around her start to lose theirs. So yes, I'd say have her get started!

If she has no weight lifting experience, she might want to hire someone to help her with proper form when she starts. But once she gets started, I'm willing to bet she'll feel fantastic, energetic, and STRONG.

I'm 42, and quite overweight. I also had no real weight lifting experience. The only adjustment I've made is to add a third workout at each level in Stage 1. So far, so good.

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't sure how to word the question, and I appreciate everyone answering

My mom has been in a bit of an exercise 'rut', and since I have been doing NROL for men for about a month (and enjoying it thoroughly), I thought maybe I would recommend NROL4W for her.

49 is young! I'm 59 and will soon be starting stage 2. I've been exercising/lifting for nearly 20 years, but some of the exercises in this program are new to me. I think help with proper form & increasing weights very gradually would be most helpful for her. A strong woman is a young woman!

I am so glad to read this b/c my mom just picked up a copy after I sent my dad the NROL. They are both in their early 60's. I even sent her the link to this forum, so I especially hopes she reads it. I am excited for them.

Yay! Good for you! You should encourage your Mom all you can - my son and I both lift weights and he's always giving me advice. So nice - great for both of you, and it can only do your Mom good!

You are sweet to look out for your mom. I wish you could see my sister-in-law. She is 52 and is totally ripped! You wouldn't believe that she is 52! I am 43 and have been lifting for awhile. We ain't that old!
