Default Cardio Burn - in a new magazine

I almost passed out just reading this workout. I picked up the latest Fitness Rx for Women magazine and this workout is posted. They call it the "Ultimate Cardio-Sculpting Fat-Burning Circuit." At the advanced level you can burn 1000 cals a session (do it 3x a week, along with the Sexy Curves weights workout, etc.)

20 minutes each of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, and stair-climber at 80% intensity (not HR, just intensity, which they say is 170-180 HR for a woman 20-40.)

I can work at a high intensity on the elliptical and it takes me 40+ min to get 300 cals. Super high intensity and I can burn 500 cals in 60 min. That includes a few minutes here and there with my HR up to 90%, most the rest over 80% (but I'm also not 20 yrs old.)

I'm just in shock after reading this article, and I like cardio. Very few people could work out at this level, should workout at this level, or even need to.

wow. the only person I know who works out like that has some really serious self-esteem issues. I'd rather not worry about burning 1000 calories during a workout and work on making my body stronger.

There's no way they can say you'll burn 1000 calories. Firstly, because some of us here could easily weigh twice as much as others doing the same workout. A 190lb woman and a 95lb woman are going to have VERY different calorie readings for that exercise.

2 - 80 minutes of cardio? No thanks. Sounds kind of boring. And episodes of Law and Order don't even last that long, so what am I going to watch while I'm on all those machines? Not to mention, everyone else there is going to think I'm a schizo, going from machine to machine every twenty minutes.

3 - It's not bad-ass, it's not hardcore, and it probably won't even make you remotely pukey - just wiped out. So what's the point? What are the bragging rights?

I don't even think you're ALLOWED to do that workout without a spandex thong and bike shorts.

Come on. Don't you know by now to not get your information from a magazine?

Are they crazy??? As a 40-year-old, I know how I feel when my HR is in the 170's - I get it there doing HIIT. Maintaining (for me) over 90% max HR for 80 minutes would be suicidal, and I'm in pretty good shape! 70-80% of INTENSITY, for me, would be HR in the 150's, maybe 160. And even then, I don't think I'd want to attempt 80 straight minutes that high. Isn't that what they invented intervals for?

They must be crazy, and probably also stupid. When I do HIIT I usually get my HR up to around 174, which is about 93% of my max. There is absolutely no way I could sustain that for anywhere near 80 minutes. I'm pretty sure I couldn't sustain it for 5 minutes. I think the math in the article must be off. I'm right in the middle of that age group (I'm 32) and I don't get my HR up to 93% of max by exercising at '80% intensity'.

Also, it sounds like absolutely no fun at all. 'Hey! Here's how to become an exercise bulimic! Go nuts girls!'

That is crazy. I have had my maximum heart rate and V02max tested in a fitness lab and my max is around 175 (shows how off the 220-age can be) so working at 170-180 BPM for would not even be phsyically possible for me. Ridiculous!
