Default Question about Peanut Butter snack bar from the book

Hi all! I'm having a hard time getting enough protein in every day. Several people I know keep suggesting adding peanut butter, but I just don't like peanut butter. i was wondering if anybody has an idea about something that could be substituted in for peanut butter. I love the recipe for the Peanut Butter Snack Bar in NROL4W, so I'm hoping maybe somebody could suggest a way to use the recipe while substituting something for the peanut butter.

Thanks!

Some good, easy sources of protein:

Cottage Cheese - Very high in protein
Kefir - perhaps the second highest source of dairy protein. Look in the dairy section of your grocer.
Whey
Casein

Peanut butter is only good as a protein source if you can combine it with grains. Many people throw peanut butter in oatmeal.

However, if you don't like peanut butter, why are you looking at a peanut butter bar recipe? I don't like raisins, so I'm certainly not going to consider a raisin cookie recipe.

If you eat dairy, then I'd also recommend low-fat string cheese and plain yogurt as well as cottage cheese. Chocolate protein powder can be thrown into anything you want chocolatey; you can also get protein powder in a "natural" flavor to mix in with non-sweet dishes. Egg whites are cheap and easy and you can crack these right into oatmeal instead of peanut butter. Just add them with the oats when your water starts boiling.

Is it the peanuts you don't like? Because you could try almond butter, cashew butter, etc. Or just add in some almonds, walnuts or cashews to whatever you're eating.

I would imagine you could find a protein bar recipe that uses unsweetened applesauce instead of peanut butter. But I'd google for a new recipe rather than just blindly make substitutions. There are about a million different recipes for homemade protein bars out there.

Fage Greek Yogurt is much higher in protein than other yogurts. It is so rich and creamy, really good and about 18 grams of protein.

Peanut butter and nut butters are fats, not proteins. The grams of protein in 2 TBSP is only 8 grams and with 200 calories. That is a lot of calories for so little protein.

Those are good options, everybody! Thanks!

Cynic, I was just looking through the recipes in NROL4W again last night and the Peanut Butter Bar caught my attention and started me thinking.

maggieandmommy, I don't care for peanut butter either so I used almond butter in for the bars in the book. Result - delicious!

I think a nut butter would work better in this case than something like cottage cheese. The nut butter's sticky consistency works well to hold these bars together. Like others said, almond butter is good, and cashew butter is good too because it has a very mild taste.

I am just confused as to how one dislikes Peanut Butter! I am very jealous too. I had a rough night when I was in college - don't know what led up to it, but I fell asleep while pigging out on PB with a spoon and I woke up with PB stuck to the roof of my mouth and half a jar gone. Disgusting!
