I'm sure Chris will send you samples!! I LOVE the chocolate. I use 8 oz of water and 3 ice cubes when I make mine. I have to have it with the blender and the ice cubes....cuz I like it like a shake. The chocolate with a few frozen banana slices is great! Probably would be good with the vanilla, too! I got a sample of the strawberry and liked it, too. I just keep going back to the chocolate. Oh, and I like to mix the choc and vanilla.

I was thinking of mixing the chocolate and strawberry... chocolate covered strawberries are my all-time FAVORITE dessert! It's interesting that you use water... I've never found a protein I like with water so I always use milk. I'll have to try this one with water instead, it would definitely be more convenient. How much comes in a sample? enough for one shake?

I have been using GNC Soy 95 Vanilla. It isn't too bad, but I don't like it with water only. I just tried the Chocolate and I didn;t like it at all, too chalky tasting. It was okay in oatmeal though.

That both have artificial sweeteners; I don't know about MSG though.

I use EAS from BJ's wholesale. $29.99 for a 5lb resealable bag. I put it in an old GNC container since the bag can be a pain. The vanilla is pretty good and it's a mix of whey concentrate and isolate. BJ's wholesale in Ocean, NJ. No MSG from what I remember, I'm sensitive to it, but it might have splenda.

Kara, just wanted to let you know that on my carb-load day Saturday, I had the Vanilla and I put in my water and then I used frozen banana slices for my 'ice cubes' and it was awesome!! I'm going to try it with frozen cherries this saturday!

I haven't tried any of these yet. I guess my question would be. What tastes the best and is affordable and affective?

Taste is an individual preference as you can see by reading this thread. You are just going to have to try some for yourself. Took me about 12 different kind before I found one I liked.

I use Whole Gains in Chocolate right now. I bought it at GNC around $40-something. I like it alright. It's not bad in water, but it's best in milk. I love it in a smoothie.

A friend of mine recommended IsoPure to me. I think I'll try it out next. I'm not a carbophob, but I am concerned I consume too many carbs. I believe IsoPure is either zero or low carb.

Is there any reason for the shake before workout to be a different type of protein?

I've read some about whey before and a soy/whey or slower digesting protein after. any thoughts?

There's no reason to have a shake pre workout for me at least. Just make sure you eat some energy supplying carbs (some ppl prefer low GI carbs, otherwise they feel sluggish and sleepy).....and a little protein. My fav is brown rice and fat-free cottage cheese.

Now post-workout most would benefit from a shake of 30-40g of maltodextrin or dextrose and 25 grams of whey. Quick absorption and ingestion of nutrients is the purpose post-workout.

excellent point about the maltodextrin/dextrose. So many people shy away from carbs but after a workout you really need those carbs. They help "transport" the protein to the muscles and help the muscle recover.

Yes I'm quoting myself, and I find that strange, but oh well, lol. My protein came in yesterday and I was able to try it for the first time today. I did a little experiement and had two mini-shakes with the vanilla, which is the one I actually bought, I have samples of the other two.
I put half a scoop in water and half a scoop in milk and had both. Granted I didn't put the water one in a blender and add ice like Jane does, but I did not care for the taste in water (not surprising... I have not found a protein powder I've ever liked in water)
I did however, like it in milk. I may have accidentally used too much milk as I think I drowned out the flavor a little bit, but it was good and it mixed well. I'm excited to try the other flavors And I have a bag of frozen berries that I might add to the vanilla next time too.. that sounds yummy! :-)

Hey, Kara...today I had to bring my PP to work so I had to just use water and some crushed ice and shake it up because I couldn't lug my blender to work and.....didn't like it. TOTALLY different taste! It still mixed up really good, but the blender is the BOMB for making it taste great!
