Default Which whey protien to buy, I'm stuck between 2

Well i have decided just to buy the whey protien from GNC. I'm going to purchase their 10 dollar gold member card which will give me 20% off on all prices. I'm heading over to pick up the protien. However i am debating between 2 types. the first one is obviously designer whey and the second is Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Double Rich. The ON 100% seems better in terms of protien by serving and it is cheaper. But the designer whey has more vitamins in it. I am not to tied down by price, i just want to buy a good protien powder that will not make me retain water and as no creatine in it.

Honestly, I think the more important thing is taste. The protein is probably about the same, but you want something that you find drinkable. Could you ask the GNC folks for some samples before you commit? (I've made the mistake of buying a $20 jar of protein powder and finding it undrinkable before. Total waste.) I will add that I find the Designer Whey to be completely inoffensive.

(Btw, I was going to post the same thing on the other board earlier, but didn't get around to it. )

I have to say that I don't like the taste of either of them BUT I am extremely finicky when it comes to my PWO so I'm probably not the best person to judge. The only thing I have found so far that I like is Nitrean. I haven't tried TrueProtein yet, but I've heard good things.

Years ago when I discovered BFL, I used EAS Whey Protien powder....I liked it and that's what I'm still using. I use the banana flavor and it's really good!

some rules not covered in NROL4W:

1. Avoid GNC. It's overly expensive stuff.
2. You should be getting enough vitamins in your feeds + multi-vit. So, don't worry about the vitamins in whey. It's a protein and should focus on being that.

I've always like ON for it's cost effectiveness. However, the whey concentrate from trueprotein.com is cheaper, but I'm hearing the flavors don't do well to actually flavor it. You might give it a try, perhaps get 1-2 lbs and see for yourself.

Otherwise, ON's is about $7.50/lb if oyu buy the 10lb bag.

I love BSN Lean Dessert. The only whey powder I have every actually liked and repurchased. It isn't the cheapest but really delicious.

Sent you a PM on where to buy stuff.

I love the taste of BSN Lean Dessert, but it isn't a whey proten per se. It's a good blended protein for sustained-release as a meal replacement or before bed. It's not what you want in a post-workout shake. PWO you want a quick-release whey concentrate or whey isolate.

I use the ON Double rich chocolate. With water it kinda tastes like watered down yoo-hoo. It's not bad. With skim milk, it actually tastes really good. Almost like a thin milkshake. Maybe my taste standards are low though.

EAS's 100% Whey has been good to me. Palatable taste. Then again, I pound um down in one gulp. My theory: they aren't supposed to taste amazing. Just good enough to get um down. Plus, you use more water and you dilute the flavor anyway, which makes many tastier. The 100% Whey mixes very well, which is why I like it.

Feral and Kevin, is there a reason you use water rather than milk?

I got Jarrow whey in natural flavor from vitacost-a little over $12 for 2lbs. The shipping is $4.99 no matter how big your order. It has a mild powdered milk taste, mixes well (we've only put it in milk)and can be easily flavored with vanilla, chocolate, etc.

Plus you can get a 6-lb bag for $28 at Sam's Club.

I haven't seen anything else out there that comes close value-wise.

If i'm drinking it at home I use milk, because I can keep it in the fridge. If I go to the gym, I use water because it's a 15 minute drive, 15 minute warm up, 45 to 60 minute exercise. I just don't like the idea of leaving milk in a locker getting warm for an hour and 15/30. I'm sure it's fine, especially skim milk because it has very little fat, but milk always weirds me out. When it's real cold i'll just leave it in the car, but lately it's been warm.

I like the ON too. If you can still find some of the Extreme Milk Chocolate (limited edition released around Christmas-time) it is definitely better than the Double Rich Chocolate. I have some of the BSN Lean Dessert in Cinnamon Roll, but I don't really like the consistency of it.

Yes, the Lean Dessert is a blend (whey isolate with some casein) but whey is the majority of the protein and is more than enough to meet the needs PWO.

Some studies have even shown that a whey/casein mix is more effective than whey alone for PWO needs.

Has anyone tried Biotest Metabolic Drive? My former trainer swore by this stuff.

I use American Sports Nutrition brand and really really like it. American Sports Nutrition - Double Dutch Chocolate Supreme American Whey - 3 lb.

The chocolate is my favorite but I have the vanilla and it's pretty good too. I just think the vanilla tastes better in stuff instead of on its own...but maybe it's because I love chocolate so much more than vanilla.

I use Biotest MD, If you mix the vanilla with cottage cheese and some applesauce it is darn close to cheesecake

The chocolate is my favourite though.

I take one of my cold packs that I use for wrapping around an injury, and I wrap it around my shaker.

However, now that I workout at home, it's no problem. I'm thinking about joining a gym again, but I'm undecided. It's good to have a variety of scenery.

I have tried the designer whey and it does not taste that great, in my opinion. I had to mix it with Milk or yogurt in order to have it. Not to make your decision harder but you should try http://www.vitaminworld.com/vf/labels/067688VW.pdf. I really like the taste of the strawberry flavor!!! But, I tottally agree with what everyone else said, Dont worry about vitamins in protein, you get enough from a mutli-vitamin. Hope this helps

I'm lactose intolerant, and so don't use any milk. My preference for whey is Dymatize Elite Whey due to the enzyme blend that is added. It makes a huge difference for me. (and for others around me....)

The overall thing is that there's a lot of great brands out there, and a lot of bad ones. Taking suggestions here is a good start, but you have to find one you like the taste of and one that doesn't bug your stomach. A lot of companies will send you sample packs, or your local health food store should have one. Try that if you're not sure.

I agree with Cynic about GNC stuff though. Order online.

I just bought Body Fortress from Walmart. It was to get me by until I got an order for Fitness Lab natural vanilla. ARRRGGGG I like Body Fortress better! A lot BETTER! It runs about $12-$13.00 for 2lbs.

More protein per scoop and vanilla is great and low sugar. I bought the chocolate YUCK! So what I have done is add a teaspoon of Hershey special dark cocoa (30 cals TBS) and it makes GREAT chocolate with the vanilla.

Gotta 5 lb tub of the other stuff now tho . And a tub of chocolate....

I totally can add the vanilla to anything and it is fine.

The dark chocolate has some nice anti-oxidants too, so you're making smart choices, whether you know it or not.

Oh no, it's yucky? I'm sitting here looking at the 2lb tub of Body Fortress Chocolate I just bought at lunchtime. Maybe I can add chocolate to my chocolate?

Maybe it was just mine??? I thought it tasted chemically. Perhaps we can doctor it to make it okay?

I make protein pudding with 1/2 packet of SF chocolate pudding and a scoop of chocolate and a cup of skim milk. It was AWFUL! I was so bummed.

I also like to add it to my oatmeal with a couple of teaspoons of peanutbutter and a splash of milk. IMHO I thought it was better with vanilla and adding cocoa!
