Shoes
This may be silly, but what type of shoes is everyone wearing? I think I need some flatter shoes, but what about doing intervals after lifting? Do you change to running shoes?
My aerobic shoes which worked great for step or kickboxing aren't making my feet very happy.
Lori mentioned Nike Free 4.0. Are those the trainers or runners? Where did you get them? Do you use them for intervals too? I looked at the sporting goods store in my small town and they didn't have them.

Here's a Nike Free trainer 7.0. They aren't cheap, obviously, but they get rave reviews as a good shoe for lifting.

I might get me a pair of Nike Free. I just bought Chuck Taylor's All Star, and they are great for squats and deads....but you should have seen me trying to do lunges in those..on the aerobics room floor )))))

Ohhh...I just ordered those from the Nike site on Friday! I looked all over town and they have been completely sold out. I even went to the Nike Outlet and the gal there told me they won't have any until the spring. I am so excited to get them, I have heard alot of great things about them. I decided on the trainers because of that strap across the top for additional support. I wil use them specifically for weight lifting as I have separate shoes I wear for running.

Cynic, which Chuck Taylor shoes do you have? 35.00 is more in my price range at the moment.

I wear Nike Free 3.0's. I wanted the flattest version they had available. I love them. And no, I don't change shoes to do energy system work. I wear mine for everything I'm doing.

Just came from the gym. Had to do deads as well as lunges...Didn't want to bring Chucks and some other floor-gripping shoes. Found a pair of Puma Future Cat Low shoes in my closet. You know what they worked just fine. Check'em out:
yeas, they are not cheap, but I am sure they can be found on ebay for less.

I wear chucks or a pair of shoes that're like wrestling shoes, they're just barely sometihng on my feet. I want these: Vibram Shoes really really badly. At home I'm barefoot.
I do almost all my "cardio" in whatever I'm lifting in except: at home on elliptical I can't do barefoot because of the pedals' bumps, running for more than a few minutes of HIIT I use runners, esp outside, because it's easier on the knees for me.
Man-o-man do I want those shoes. Dude at my gym had them on the other day. /me jealous.

Another question on these shoes. I live in a small town, so there is no store within 45 minutes of me where I can try them on. Because of this, I do most of my shopping online.
I have a wide foot and 99 percent of the time have to buy a wide width. Do these Nike's run true to size...or a tad big. I'm wondering if I should buy a pair of the Chuck Taylors as most of the reviews at Zappos...people say they run pretty big.
Thanks, Jodi

The Nike's run kinda small and I think they're narrow too. Some people have bought one size up, but I bought my regular size 8 and it fits, just snugly. Roland has wide feet and he bought a bigger size Free. You might ask him what he thinks of their width.

But they sure are CUTE (although given a choice between cute and functional, I'd buy functional. But I like that these are both).

I love those!
So, bear with me here, is it better to lift with a flatter shoe? I did not know this and just always wear my Asics. Hmmm, I'm curious and always looking for a good reason for a new pair of shoes.

It is thought that the best footwear for weight-lifters is the one with flat soles. That helps to avoid placing the weight on the patellofemoral joint (hence the knee pain). Also, shoes that elevate your heels don't allow you to absorb force properly and they will also prevent you from being able to "push" through your heels because you'll automatically be in a mechanical position to push through your toes.

I learn something new here, everyday! Well, that all makes sense and I have had one knee that is trying to be a little funky, so I think it's time for a new pair of shoes!
Thanks so much, Natalia!

I find the NIKE Free's narrow, as well. Suits me fine since I have very narrow feet. Also, I went up 1/2 size.

Well, I decided to order a pair of the Chuck Taylors All Star Core Ox shoes. Not sure if they are the best choice, but with a wide foot I am pretty sure the Nike's would be too narrow. Not only are my feet wide, but on my right foot I have a bunion. From reviews I've read for the Taylor shoes, they run pretty big and roomy so they should fit my wide feet.
Next time I'm in a shopping area with some sporting good's stores, I'll stop in and try on the Nike Free's or any other weight lifting shoe I find. For now, the Chuck Taylor's should be better then my cross-training New Balance shoes for weights.
