Just reporting:
I've had another book for 8 days, and it is now beginning to fall apart. Seems like I was this one is one that gets worse with use. However, at this point, I'm more likely to take it to be spiral bound because I don't want to have to transfer my notes to a third book.
Comment:
I just looked at the front of this book for the publisher. Here is the FAQ on what they "do" about defective books. Looks like if you want a non-defective book now, you have to find it yourself or wait.

I like to open my books wide for reading, and let me tell you, this book is more than amenable to that - the pages & spine popped right open and the bugger now lies flat on its own...
So, yeah, binding not so great, but I'm not that annoyed overall.

I'll check in a few times a month to see if the problem has gone away. I hope penguin gets this problem recitfied soon. I'd like to pick up the book, but I'm not paying for a book that's going to fall apart the moment I open it.

I ordered mine shortly after Christmas from B&N online and have not had any issues with the binding. So it's not all books, or maybe I just got lucky!
Actually, maybe not. While I agree there is a problem, the thing is there isn't a thread for those who DON'T have a problem....could be there are more of us. I am one of them....mine is problem free.
Well, that's two. However, two of the three I plan to buy are intended as gifts to someone and I don't want to get cursed with bad binding. That would be a double reaming.
I bought 2 copies from B&N, one for me and one for a friend. Mine immediately started falling apart, but I checked with my friend and hers is fine. I bought another copy (for another friend) from Amazon and it did the same as mine. So, I think you just get lucky if they don't start cracking and falling apart.
I have a question: I'd like to take mine and get it spiral bound and I've never done that before, does anyone know who/what kind of business does this? Thanks!

Ok, I wanted to update my situation. I was going to B&N this past week to pick up a book up and I browsed the shelf to see if they had a copy of NROL4W, that I could replace mine with. They did and I do have to say that the customer service was great.
Long story short, I exchanged my falling apart copy for a brand spanking new one, that hasn't made a cracking sound or anything.
