Default alternative for wide grip lat pulldown??

i was hoping someone(LOU maybe??) might be able to suggest and alternative exercise to the wide grip lat pulldown. i'm working out at home for the first stage of the workout. i'm limited to body weight, a stability ball and adjustable dumbbells.

i've already substituted one arm rows for the seated row. would pullovers work for the wide grip lat pulldown?

On page 201 Lou says that a pullover is an alternative exercise for the lat pulldown, just not a "perfect substitute". Hope that helps

Try this out. You'll need to invest around $30 though.

Go to Perform Better and buy some bands ... you can even get inexpensive bands at Wal-Mart ... then you can do any cable-type exercises with ease, just attach at whatever height you need. The resistance is slightly different, but is an acceptable substitute.

Vanessa, where did you buy it? Looks like what I'm looking for - something you can take down when not using.

How difficult is it to install/uninstall and is it sturdy? I'm always afraid I'll buy one and it'll fall out of the door frame while I'm doing the pull ups!

I have that exact bar. I got it at a local fitness shop. And once it's put together, you can take it up and down with no markings on your wall.

But how odd, they don't carry that band as shown in the clip.

Where can I find that?
Is there a specific name for the band he uses in the clip?

The band in the clip looks like an Iron Woody band:
Woody Bands, Fitness Bands, Flex Bands, Exercise Bands from Iron Woody Fitness

Or here: Strength Bands: Strength band training

You can also buy bands from Dave Schmitz (the super band guy we all loved from JP's last Summit):
PERFORMAX Performance Training, training camps, programs and products for athletes and coaches

The original bands were made by JumpStretch and you can buy them from Elite Fitness Systems: Elite Fitness Systems

All three of those places are reputable companies with good customer service. Dave is great, as are the guys from Iron Woody's. I bought my purple band from Dave and I also have a pair of minibands from Iron Woody's.

Thank you for this

Also... which resistance would I use?
Which band do you use ( thinking specifically for assisted pull-ups, as in the video clip)

It all depends on how much help you think you'll need. Get a bigger band for more assistance. The video shows a medium Iron Woody band. That would give you 50-120 lb of assist (depending on how much it's stretched out) and it's wide enough that it won't roll up or pop off when you're using it. If you're strong enough to only need a miniband (which is only 1/2" wide), then it'd probably be easier to just do negative chin-ups because the band tends to roll off your leg or foot.

Or you could buy one of the packages that have several bands of various sizes. Then you could use a smaller band as you get stronger. They're pretty cool for lots of other exercises too. Dave Schmitz has a lot of information on how to use them up on his site.

This is the light band (which is purple) that I have. It's a similar size to the Iron Woody medium. PERFORMAX Performance Training, training camps, programs and products for athletes and coaches

The two companies label them differently and so it's a bit confusing. Iron Woody's calls them (in increasing order of thickness):
mini
super mini
small
medium
large

The JumpStretch bands are very close to the same sizes, just called:
mini
monster mini
average
light
strong

Since I can't do this particular exercise at home, I wonder if it's better to do the pullovers as suggested in the book or is it a better substitute to do wide grip assisted pullups? I have a pullup bar and I have Iron Woody bands, so I thought I'd run the question by all of you.

If you've got the pull-up bar and the bands, try the assisted pull-ups. That's the more difficult choice. If it's just too hard, even with the bands to assist, then do the pullovers.

Will these bands hold up a heavy person?? I can picture myself snapping one and getting some severe back lash LOL!

I am about 255 lbs.

Yes, don't worry about it. They're very stretchy, just like a rubberband. I suppose if you were to stretch them 10 feet or more, they might break, but do you intend bungie jumping from the 3rd floor with them? No? Then you're fine.

The blue colored bands might be what you need. They provide the most resistance/assistance I've found so far.

I got my doorway pull-up bar from Amazon and it looks like it's no longer available, but here is a page with a variety of them: Amazon.com: chin up bar

I have a pull up bar like that that I got from BeachBody. I'm not really a fan of their "buy buy buy" tactics, but it is a great bar. Here's the link.

I checked out the installation video... So you have to actually drill holes in order to install the P90X bar.... I was hoping to find something I wouldn't have to drill holes in the wall. Are any of you using something that requires no drilling?

Cammie, door gyms like this one: Amazon.com: Creative Fitness Door Gym: Sports & Outdoors and this one: Amazon.com: Everlast Multi Function Chinning Bar: Sports & Outdoors don't need to be screwed into anything. They use a door jam to hang on to, but they don't leave marks and they are really simple to put up and take down.

Thank you! I did see those, but since they look so similar to the P90X bar I figured that they would be installed in the same way.

Okay. Bumping up again, sorry for the endless questions. I decided to get this pull up bar:

Amazon.com: Everlast Multi Function Chinning Bar: Sports & Outdoors

But I'm unsure of which band to use. I'm pretty novice like seriously novice - like I've never done one before in my life - at pullups so I'm assuming I'll need one of these, correct?

Jump Stretch

Or one of these?

PERFORMAX Performance Training, training camps, programs and products for athletes and coaches

They look pretty similar in terms of resistance? Are they all the same length? None of them really tell you how LONG they are, just how WIDE they are...

Either one. They're long, but it doesn't matter how long they are because you can shorten them up by looping them or tying a knot in them. So the length isn't that important. The width determines how strong they are.

I work out at home, too.

For the lat pulldown I had DH securely install a hook in one of the doorframes...I just hang a heavy duty dynaband from it and tug away (sitting on my knees). I'm freakin' sore from yesterday's session so it works for me!

I like that substitute a lot better than a DB pullover. Band pulldowns can be effective if you can get the tension just right.

I'll have to try that. My sweet gramma bought me some bands for my birthday and I admit I was not a fan of doing DB pullovers. It was my least favorite thing last week (and not because of it being hard, those are my favorite things. It was just awkward for me)
