Default Newb question :)

Hi! I've been reading NROL and the new one for women is coming soon. I'm training to reach my goal weight and also for western wildland firefighting. I took my first trip out last year after getting back in reasonable shape and meeting some weight loss goals. Now I need to get the rest of the way to where I want to be. I really need to keep on endurance training for the mountain climbing aspect of the firefighting (huff puff!) but I want, need actually, more upper body strength.

In NROL it talks about the body favoring endurance over strength when you train for both. Is there any way to alternate workouts so that I have gains in both areas ie. one week strength, one week endurance etc.? I suspect there would be some regardless of schedule but a way to optimize this would be good to know in advance so I'm not spinning my wheels.

TIA

When you get the book, you can read in more detail what Lou has to say about this. In particular, you can see pages 26 and 231, for example.

Basically, 2 or 3 full-body weight-training workouts a week. You can do some endurance training on off days in the form of intervals, then a 5-minute break, and then continue with some steady-state endurance at an easy pace.

Hope that helps,

If I recall correctly I think the book says that the interference effect is lessened when you do both on the same day. That is, weight training, followed by cardio training.
