You must be more popular with them than I - I ordered a popular computer game in the expectation I'd get it on the release date... Well two weeks later the game landed on my doorstep...

cynthia, it is a GREAT book. finally, a book for women that doesn't preach low calorie/high cardio. the workouts will be very challenging! many of the moves are similar to the ones I have been doing in NROL since februrary, but they are arranged completely differently--total body workouts-2, preferably 3 a week. I like how they suggest how to combine a high intensity cardio with other cardio on the non-lifting days. and I am totally thrilled about the goal of a negative chin up!!!
the food plan is realistic, and can include OCCASIONAL wine and dark chocolate, but there is a nice risks/benefits discussion on alcohol (as my glass of shiraz for the evening aerates......) I think the food plan may not be necessarily easy to follow or intuitive to beginners who might need more guidance--there might not be enough planned menus for folks who need more structure. the calorie guidelines are realistic, but I think people will need a way to track calories, either by software or manually. I think it could be easy to overdo calories, particularly the nuts and post workout shakes--I plan to make sure I stick to my calorie level and eat lighter for dinner on days when I consume 250-300 calories post workout. I definitely agree with their suggestion to eat MAINTENANCE calories for the first month until you see what your body does. I will do this. I am THRILLED that this plan is not a Body for life low fat clone--and their approach to nutrition is very balanced--very much not like the body builder types at my gym who preach protein, green veggies and no fat. I was scared that the meal plan would be like what some of the women in my gym do--steroids, protein, spinach. repeat.
I plan to track my calories in dietpower.com a marvelous software. if anyone is interested in it, please email me.
overall, an awesome read. it is about time that someone has written a book for women who want to get strong and fit as a primary goal, with improvement of body composition as a nice side effect of doing what is good for your health and your body.

Thanks for the great review, I am excited to pick up the book soon!! I am not sure how the workouts will fit with my current half-marathon training, I may need to wait to start NROL until I finish that March.

cynthia, I had a full marathon planned for feb 17, but I am not going to do it. I had an IT band injury and can run 4-6 miles pain free, but I don't want to risk chronic injury--I think I will just focus on strength and getting leaner.

Fengshway, thanks for the kind words about the book.
Interesting comment about some readers needing more structure on diets. That's a tough judgment call. With Testosterone Advantage Plan, we had one week of fully structured meal plans for three different calorie levels, and guys complained that there wasn't enough wiggle room. If you didn't like one thing (like cottage cheese), it seemed to throw the entire plan off the rails.
The main reason I decided to go with a modular plan was the flexibility -- I just thought readers would appreciate more choices.
Another reason, to be honest, is that the readers I've heard from the past two years are really intelligent. NROL found an audience of highly educated lifters and gym rats, and I kind of figured that NROL for Women would also be most appealing to the female half of that demographic. (When I first started hearing from professors at major universities, I wanted to ask if they understood that they're a lot smarter than the author. But I figure that guys who teach doctoral candidates are used to being smarter than just about everybody they deal with.) So I figure the readers will be able to understand and manage the system, and will appreciate the flexibility.
With the workouts, it makes more sense to say, "Do this, in this order, on these days." But the obvious difference with meal plans is that people need to eat five or six times a day, vs. training three times a week.
But if readers tell me they prefer it the other way -- well, there's always the next book!

There's a term in the publishing business. I think it's "one-day laydown," or something like that. It's when a book is so hugely anticipated that the publisher can demand an exact date for sales to begin. That's how Amazon managed to get the final Harry Potter book into readers' hands on the release date. (I couldn't believe it when the truck pulled up to my house and the driver hand-delivered the book. I never really believed it was possible to drop hundreds of thousands of books on the same day.)
Obviously, this has never applied to anything I've written!

lou, I definitely appreciate the flexiblity of the meal plans. one thing I particularly like, is that you recommend the post workout protein shake, but you don't prescribe multiple shakes every day like other body builder type plans. I prefer getting my nutrients from whole foods, but I agree with the data about whey protein in particular as a recovery food. I started with muscle milk light after my workout today!! I am on strength 2, man of constant obligation out of NROL. will wait to start the new book when everyone here starts.

I received my copy today and it's a real page turner. NROL4W is exceeding all my expectations (and my expectations were high). How could you resist with chapter titles like Step Away from the Treadmill and Our Meal Plans Can Beat Up Their Meal Plans; rules like Rule #1 The purpose of lifting weights is to build muscle and Rule #2 Muscle is hard to build; and quotes like "I'm still waiting for that moment when I look in the mirror and say, 'Damn it, I'm just too big!'" and "the corollary of New Rules 1 through 4: The goal in the weight room is to develop type II muscle fibers, which have the greatest potential for growth. (I have certainly never read those words in a book written to women before!)
He references Bill Hartman and mentions this forum. The workouts look challenging and interesting. The nutrition section comes before the workout section, which seems most appropriate, and the recipes look yummy. You guys are gonna love this book!
Lou is truly the most entertaining fitness writer out there. When he has the sense to add Alwyn's exercise expertise and Cass' nutritional genius, you end up with the best general fitness book for women that's ever been written.
I'll let you know what I really think when I finish reading the book.
