would the iron gym work in a closet set up? as in one side is braced on the frame, but the other on the closet doors (one door slid open)? i'm thinking it *might* cause the doors to come off track...

No. It has to be a doorway with a frame with molding on both sides and the top. Mine works on bedroom, garage, and bathroom doors, and even on the front door of the house. I just take it down and put in the closet when I'm done.
Before you get it, make sure it'll go around your door mouldings (read: you have standard sizes). The place I'm in now has oversized mouldings, so I can't use mine. In the meantime, grab two chairs and a broom handle and do some inverted rows.

I can't speak to the Iron Gym's quality but the UD-6 that I got from that site feels like it'll last me a lifetime. Also, they make an optional size that fits into large doorways with lots of trim like mine.
Good to know there's an option for odd size doors. Although, I think it will leave the same marks as the Iron Gym, which are tiny and rub off. They are the contact points of the foam on the moldings.
The UDs are the one that I used to recommend, but $30 vs $60 is a big deal for most people. $30 at Target is an easy decision.
If you compare the Iron Gym and the UD5 or UD6, I think that the UDs are far more solid. The IG needs to be bolted together before you can use it.
If you're planning to do a lot of wide grip work, the handles being away from the wall is a BIG plus. There is no neutral grip positions on the UDs, though.
The iron gym looks alot better than the bars that I saw when I first started looking. I went with one of those "power tower" from Dick's sporting goods. On sale for a hundred bucks, and well worth it. If you can afford it and have the space, I say get one of those power towers, if not that iron gym looks good if it fits in your doorway.
Infomercials crack me up. Out of curiousity, it says u can do dips with it on the floor. It looks as if the guy is only going an inch or two down, can u even use it to do dips?
There is no neutral grip positions on the UDs, though.
Picture further down shows model doing it holding onto the L arm.
My husband broke the Iron Gym's little metal bracket thing that goes under the molding. I can attach the Iron Gym to the door & use my weight to hold it in place without the metal bracket. However, I only use neutral grip to ensure that it stays in place.
HldOnMgnolia: Thanks for the link. Since we have a mix of wall types in between both houses and it looks very sturdy, I think I'm going to order a UD6 with the extended arms.

I don't use that bracket because I use the IG on multiple doors.
From a physics perspective, any of the grip positions should be fine as long as you are always putting weight on it. So, no jump pullups!
My son has an IG at his mom's house, and you can be sure that the bracket is installed there!
