Default Barbell or Dumbell

If the barbells and racks are full at the gym, is it acceptable to use dumbells instead - I'm talking about squats and lunges.

I wouldn't have the grip strength to use DB's heavy enough for squats, but I do use DB's for lunges.

If you get into a situation like this where the gym is full and you need to use DB's for squats, I would suggest goblet squats because it shouldn't effect your grip as much. If you think goblet squats aren't an efficient replacement for the regular barbell on the back squats....try them with a 100 pound DB and let me know how they feel.

Fortunately, I've never had a problem getting access to a squat rack.

Right on...me either, but I'm serious about the goblet squats with the 100 pound DB because I haven't progressed to that level yet and I'm curious as to what might happen when I do!!

Goblet squats will definatley work you pretty well. I had never tried them until recently. I thought since they were similar to a front squat, I couldn't add enough weight properly with one DB.....I was sorely mistaken, especially when it came to 20 rep range!

The thing I like about the goblet squats is that you can do them anywhere with just about any heavy object. I seriously have used sandbags, a concrete block, a big rock I found on vacation once, and my packed suitcase in a hotel room.

Goblets are one of my favorite form of squats. I have found that goblet squats are a great way to work on form. They do tend to force me from leaning out over my knees.
