In that regard it is similar to some of the CrossFit metcon workouts. However, CrossFit also incorporates heavy lifting, running, gymnastics and bodyweight exercises on a random schedule. The theory is that CF makes you fit to respond to the unexpected, random sort of things that police, fire fighters and military personnel might encounter. You can read more on their website. For the record I've done both and found FL 3 to be as hard as any CF WOD.
