Default Any advice for those with bad knees???

My hubby has had two surgeries on his knee (torn ACL) and has a hard time with lunges.. I think he was able to do squats. He said that it wasn't extremely painful, but it felt awkward. I'm thinking because he has favored the bad knee for so long.

Should he substitute lunges with something that won't bother his knee? If he's having a tough time with lunges he probably won't be able to do the bulgarian split squats when the time comes.

Anyone out there with bad knees?? How have you workouts been going??

I've got nothing other than to say congrats on getting your husband to start lifting... If I remember right, he was resisting.

All pain is personal, just as all politics is local, so what worked for me when I had bum knees may not help your husband at all.

But for me, doing reverse lunges instead of forward lunges was a lot more comfortable. Step-ups (using a low step) were an even better choice than either type of lunge.

The one big constant is that he shouldn't do any exercise that produces pain while he's doing it. If he runs through the full list of alternatives (every type of lunge and step-up) and can't find anything that works, then the final option is simply skipping that exercise altogether.
