Default Deadlift Question

Hey guys. My legs have no mobility in them at all. The only way I can do squats without going on my tip toes and falling on my face is by standing on 5 lb weights. My question is how can I do dead lifts? I cant bend low enough to the ground to grip the bar without going on my tip toes. Any advice? Thanks.

Deadlift's take some getting used to. Over time you'll be able to go lower. But for now, go as low as you can and work with a weight you can manage.

Sounds like me when I first started.

What helped me was to practice doing body weight squats which made me develop flexibility in my ankles.

Take things slowly, no need to jump in an risk injuring yourself.

I can do them easier when my toes are pointed to the side and not straight. Is this a wrong way to do them?

Dead lifts? HEAVY and OFTEN!!! Wait, what was the question?

But seriously, work on calf and ankle stability. Also use a foam roller or tennis ball on your soleus. I find that I have the same trouble getting my ankle to flex when the soleus is tight.

FTW.

Take an aggressive approach to developing your mobility. Get a good, quality foam roller, a tube of tennis balls and start looking up SMR. In fact, do a search on this forum for SMR, foam rolling/roller, "Feel Better for 10 Bucks," "Soft Tissue Work for Tough Guys" and "Ankle Mobility."

That should turn up all you'll need, for now.

Light Bulb Moment!!!

I have been trying to figure out how to get used to doing deadlifts with one leg. I have done King Deadlifts but my balance issues preclude doing them with weight. This may be my solution. Thanks Joe.

I think another problem is ive always walked on my toes. So when I bend down to pick the bar up I need to be on my toes to pick it up.
