Default To Wrap or Not To Wrap

Hi

Last night I did Hyper II, the 'B' workout for the first time. I noticed that while doing the snatch grip deadlifts that the grip of my right hand started failing before I was at my limit. I know that I can get past this by using wrist wraps -- however, I'm conflicted.

On one hand, using wraps will let me lift greater weights, which should help my strength and size development.

On the other hand, one of the features I like about the current program is balanced development. That is, my grip strength will be more less able to handle the load that my back and legs can.

What have other people done?

Thanks,

Bruce

I think you mean straps (which hang the bar off your wrists) rather than wrist wraps (which only go around the wrist and support that joint for lifts like bench press, but wouldn't help your deadlift at all).

Here's what other people have done: http://forums.jpfitness.com/wrist-st...5.html?t=21445

Try chalk before you try anything else and see if that will make the difference.

i used chalk. My hands however still got really roughed up. A couple of times i had to stop the workout due to ripped callouses. Still when i went back to doing regular deadlifts in S1 they seemd so much easier.

You're going to get callouses. It's just part of lifting. You should, however, learn to take care of your hands. Chalk really dries out your skin. It's best to wash your hands with soap and water as soon as you're done with your workout. Then apply lotion, even better if it has a mild alpha hydroxy acid in it. If your callouses are getting really thick and are at risk of ripping, then you can apply lotion at night to help exfloliate them, or you can file them down.

Oman, I wish I could remember what big powerlifting guy it was that made jokes about just biting them off, lol. I just can't pull that silliness up in my mind right now. :p

Thanks, you're right, I meant straps. BTW, I tried to use the above link, but appears to be busted. Does it work for you?

HA! No it doesn't work for me either! Sorry about that. Let me try that again:

Wrist straps - yea or nay?

I'm currently doing H-II as well. Another thing to consider with snatch grip DL's is the realization that it will put more strain on your grip than a normal or mixed grip. Therefore you need to compensate accordingly with your weight.

I've never used straps, but it seems logical to me that they would discount the work that your grip gets without the straps. Therefore, your grip strength will not improve as much as it could have without straps. Does this make sense?

It does indeed. The way I select weights, FWIW, is to keep increasing them to the point that I can barely make the last rep in the last set. But as you suggest, the wider angle makes it much more difficult to maintain a grip since the emphasis of the weight shifts more to the weaker side of my hands -- kind of like prying my hands loose from the little finger side.

Hey, that's no joke. After 20 years of baseball I've probably swung a baseball bat a million times and I've seen some creative ways that teammates dealt with the callouses.
