Default Question about Break In

My wife is interested in starting some sort of workout plan and as I have been pretty happy with NROL, I figured starting her on the break in plan would be a good idea. The only downside is that her workout will have to take place completely at home, where at the moment we only have a few dumbbells and not a lot of room for much more. In looking at the break in program it seems to me that I can port a lot of the excercises to ones that use dumbbells, although the squats and deadlifts would probably be a red flag. My only caveat there is that she won't be using much weight early on and we could pick up a barbell if we needed to. Do you guys see any other problems with this approach?

Not initially. I think Alwyn intends the break-in program to prime the muscle, tendon, ligament and other aspects of the body for what comes later, so you could think of it as easing the person into his workouts, because they ain't easy.

I also know Alwyn believes a person should be able to bodyweight squats before doing BB or DB squats, push-ups before doing bench pressing, etc.

Go for it. The workouts are well laid out and would be great for her. We can help you with substitutions that work with your available home equipment if you get stumped. When the dumbbells you have are no longer sufficient, then you can decide if you want to purchase a barbell or more dumbbells.

Is there a substitution table for all the exercises in NROL, out here?

If not, I think that someone with the knowledge (not me, I don't know enough) will help greatly everybody here, since this question is often ask.

Perhaps we should make it a "sticky".

Thanks in advance, for who ever contribute in this effort.

I can see how that idea sounds enticing, but I'd rather think of an individual person when coming up with substitute exercise ideas. A lot of times it's the same, but sometimes it's not.

You can do squats and stiff legged deadlifts using dumbbells. http://www.powerblock.com has videos of both exercises.

Also, a year ago I had a question about dumbbell substitution and Lou answered in this thread:

Break-In Wkt B - Substitute for close-grip lat pulldown

I'm one with few words. So when I write, it must be important! Seriously, just have not been on the board much.
