Default Towel curls in HTII

Curious if anyone knows the purpose of using a towel rather than just grabbing the dumbbells in the curl exercise in HTII.

One reason that comes to mind is the effort required to grip a towel.

With a DB, you can rest the plate on your hand, but you don't get that benefit from a towel.

Grip and instability, so more work for your hand and wrist in addition to the biceps work.

Here's a tool:

I saw a guy wrap a towel around a DB, get down on all fours, place it in the back of this knee and did kickbacks.

That's a tool.

Also, the tools are those whose workouts are 75% isolation exercises. Those are tools.

There's also the pendulum effect -- the load on the biceps changes through the exercise, because of the "hanging" effect.

I thought it might be the case that there is some change in the way the load behaves, but I've never done a towel curl yet, so it would have amounted to mere speculation, something I try to avoid.

Whatever it is, and I'm inclined to think alwyn's pendulum effect is a big part of it, I've done curls before but have never been so sore as after these towel curls. Or maybe it was the chek presses. What a workout!
