Hello everyone, just stopped by to say hi and introduce myself.
I am 28 years old, 5'10", 228 lbs with a 45.5" gut. I spent four years in the Marines (1996-2000) got married in 1998, had a kid in 2000 and have been going to school, and getting fat ever since I got out of the corps.
I have been working in a health care setting and it has really been a wake up call. All day long I see these overweight people who are basically killing themselves with food and a lack of exercise. Plus, I already have borderline high blood pressure myself.
I have tried a few times in the past to lose weight but have always lost my motivation after a couple of months. However, those couple months have usually been pretty successful. I bought NROL and decided to make a serious go of it, I mean, I really want to be there for my daughter as she gets older. So here I am.
I have a nice power rack with high and low pulley, and a couple of old cardio machines. I don't have an excuse not to get in shape. I will be posting updates every now and then on my progress. I actually took a before picture last night for motivation and if it all works out I will post before and after pictures. My goals are realistic. I am looking to be at a health weight by the time I graduate with my Masters in May.
Anyway, that's my story. I'll keep everyone updated.
Congrats on committing yourself to changing your life, and welcome! You are in good company here. You may also find it helpful to start a training log in the training log section. Sometimes putting your workouts out there for public scrutiny keeps you motivated.
My dad was also a former marine who worked hard at gaining weight after he left the service. He once told us, proudly, that "the marines taught me how to eat," which my siblings and I always considered the key moment in our growing realization that our father didn't realize how fat he was.
Dad died at 69, alone in a condo he bought after his divorce from our mother. He died in a chair in front of the TV, apparently of a heart attack, probably in his sleep. (He had to sleep sitting up because of severe sleep apnea, brought on by his obesity.) No one knows exactly when he died because it took a few days before anyone got around to figuring out there was something wrong.
I can't say it was his girth that drove him away from his family, and his family away from him. (He also had a gambling problem, which was a much bigger issue.) But it was a pretty good symbol of his lack of control over his own path through life. He could've had a lot of experiences that he bypassed because he couldn't think beyond his next meal.
It sounds like you're a lot more reality-based than my father was. I really hope you stick with your plans, and enjoy a long, good, healthy life.
"I actually took a before picture last night for motivation and if it all works out I will post before and after pictures."
Before pictures are good. Hiding them away and only posting them if things work out is bad. Don't go into this with the attitude IF things workout. That is setting yourself up with a possibility for failure.
You want to get in shape, you have no excuse not to. Start a training log, No excuses. No ifs, no buts. Get it done. Post your before pics and when you get your progreess post some durings.
No IFS.

Welcome...you have chosen a good starting point with NROL. It is certainly a tome to treasure as it contains much more than just a simple workout plan. There is years of experience and knowledge packed into it.
Good luck and feel free to post questions. There are many knowledgeable people here who are willing to help...
Your post has become my "Tuesday Motivator". That was an awesome demonstration of putting things in perspective.
To you, Mr. Fat, you can do it. Nothing tastes as good as the way you'll feel.

Where else can your first post generate a reply from the originator of the site and the author of the book you're reading? This board has helped a lot of people and can help you. Good Luck.

Wow, you aren't kidding!
Thanks everyone for your support. I will definitely take the advice to post training logs and such. I will post my before picture after I figure out how to edit my face out of it. I don't feel comfortable putting my fat face out there, you never know who may see it.
Again, thanks everyone for the support, I can't believe that Lou and JP responded to my post. The entire community here seems great, I am sure I will be here for a long time to come. I will be starting the program tomorow, I'll keep everyone updated.
Hi, I WAS fat. I had very similar stats to yours when I started.
Welcome to the forums. I have done just about all of the programs in New Rules, so if you need help, I am here for ya.

Just keep in mind that diet will factor in for 80% of your effort. You can lose "weight" on diet alone, but exercising on a shitty diet will be like spinning your wheels on an ice covered road. If you don't crash, you'll spin in place until you melt down to pavement, but then you'll end up back on ice after your wheels momentarily catch.
BTW, I'm still fat, but I'm losing alright with a good diet.
Good luck, man. If you need help, encouragement and top-notch information, you've come to the right place. We're all behind you ... post that log and let your successes begin.

wishing ya good strength on your journey from another former fat person. Didnt do NROL but must say it looks good and stick to it religiously on all its advice and you'll do good
