Default Bulgarian Split Squats - bench height?

In doing the Bulgarian Split Squats, does it matter what height the bench is at? I've been wondering this for awhile. I'm 5'4" and all the benches seem rather high for my rear foot to be resting on. The height also seems to tilt me forward a bit. Just wondering if it makes a difference.

Thanks!

Just use whatever height bench you have availble to you. I too lean forward (slightly) when using a typical bench but just concentrate on keeping you body vertical.

I use the same bench for step ups and they are the real killer for me.

What was that? Don't bother with the bulgarian split squats at all? Great news because they're killing me.

Thanks for the help again, Josh

I would have to say they are my most hated exercise in any routine. Give me heavy squats anyday.

Bulgarians are evil, plain and simple. But very effective ....

I actually liked them when I had them in my routine.. but it's true that I work out mostly for endurance.. so was doing 2 x 15 with 25s and not heavier.

about the height of the bench.. for the squat itself it doesn't matter.. but the higher the bench the more balance you'll need.

Any regular bench works for me, too.
I don't think bulgarian squats are evil, see bulgarain romanian deadlifts are evil.

Anything Bulgarian is evil (unless proven otherwise).

A higher bench might demand more balance, and also more flexibility. The tendency to lean forward is, I think, a flexibility issue. If the bench you have is it, then just work within you comfort range, focus on the posture, and push yourself a little more over time. I'd even suggest keeping the load the same, and perhaps even the volume, but go for better form each time until you get it.

BTW, Gayla, great sig line.

Well - they certainly are a favorite in NROL. My **MOST** hated was the one with the overhead press thrown in - FL2 I think.

I read a good tip from CB on split squats - to focus on dropping the hips straight down.

Yeah, that's a great tip.

And I tried the overhead press version. I felt like I was on a unicycle.

Man, a lot of great tips, everyone. Thanks! Oxymoron, that's probably a key with dropping the hips straight down. The first time I did them, my knees were killing me and I think I was tilting too far forward.

Does anyone have trouble with the swiss ball lateral roll? By the time I get to them I'm so exhausted I feel like I need a spotter (and a cane just to get over to the balls!)

On another note, I've been trying to find someone at my gym who does deadlifts b/c I never feel like I'm doing the Romanian deadlifts correctly. After spending an hour scouting the gym while going about my routine, I finally realized that the free weights section was filled with people doing only bicep curls or bench presses. I did ask a couple of guys if they could help but literally all four of them said they didn't know what it was. How disappointing!

Mike Robertson posted this link in another thread. You can find the RDL video on here.
