There's more at the Total Immersion website than that but I liked the FREE VIDEOS particularly. I tried the thing about hand position today and it seemed to really help!

Total Immersion is the bible for swimming. It's very effective for adults trying to get better form. Thanks for the link.

This advice from my father, a college all-american, olympic level college swimmer, and current senior olympic record holder. Don't teach your own children to swim. Parents are too fearful of their children getting hurt while learning to swim. That fear is usually picked up by the kids and they become scarred of the water. Also if you are not a trained swimmer your kids will learn bad habits. Find a pool (the YMCA or local fitness club) that has a swim team. Sign you kids up for lesseons there as usually the coaches also teach and they will learn proper technique.

thanks for the tip, Joe. My wife is a fluent swimmer and would spend all day in the water if she could. she would do most of the teaching if we were to do it ourselves. we'll probably follow your advice next spring in preparation of opening our pool.

I saw this total immersion thread here and since i've been swimming as my primary workout, i knew getting a good stroke down was key.
I went to their site and bought the freestyle made easy DVD. So far i've watched it through two times and have been teaching myself the drills and timing and man it has made a huge difference. I don't even have the whole concept down yet, but i glide through the water so much better before. In a couple of weeks, I know i'll have a super efficient stroke and my distances and speed will hopefully skyrocket.

It depends on the club. They usually have a coach or maybe just a lead swimmer who sets workouts. Each lane may be at a different level and as you improve you move up. You'll find a lot of triathletes there trying to improve the swim portion of their training. Also a lot of good ideas on stroke development. I hope it works out for you.
