We started at a out door pool, with me and my other male team mate(in our boxers) diving in the pool to get hockey pucks with our team sticker at the bottom. I can barely swim, so me diving down to the bottow wasn't gonna happen. Lucky Joey was able to get the two and we were second out of the water. We whipped the boxers off(in the change room) and threw back on our shorts. Ran outside, met up with the two girls and the running began.
We ran a short distance with our hands tied together before we reached our bikes. From there we had a nice, 3 kilometer run to our next checkpoint. Our weakest member was on the bike, as she would remain for most of the day. We reached the first checkpoint with a good, almost 5 minute lead. From there we drew cards to see what we had to do. Joey had to run to the rugby field(200m away) and kick a field goal. Bronwyn had to jog to a nature sign 300m away and report about the wildlife in the area. Dawn had to bike over to a field 200m away and pick a certain kind of weed. I drew lucky number 4 and sat in the shade talking about cars with my old volleyball coach.
We left that checkpoint with a smaller lead than when we arrived, as Dawn had forgotten our zip lock bag for the weeds, causing her to bike back for the back. The next challenge was a short distance away, and we all had to ride a lap on a bmx track. Now, our bike was set up for Bronwyn, and shes short. So this was pretty tricky, but we still had a good lead. I had to run back to the other checkpoint to pick up a forgotten helmet, but nothing major.
Then we had a tough one. We had to trek along the river bed, carrying the bike. I carryed the bike for 3/4 of it, Joey the other 1/4. We emerged with a big lead still, and it was time for the longest run of the day. A good 6 km later, we were at our next checkpoint. Again, it was a pick your card, do your task. The marshal screwed up our task, forcing us to sit in the "sin bin" for 12 minutes when we should have had to do nothing!!!!! Needless to say, we lost our lead and now trailed.
Next checkpoint we had to carry a teammate(Joey) around a set of trees. Very tiring, as he weight almost as much as I do. After that, we had to pull a van around a circle. We got up to the leaders after the van pull, moving into first again. That was short lived. A few running challege check points later, and we were at the food point.
Each team had to eat 2 nutra grain bars, 4 granola bars and drink 2 litres of water. I ate most of it. Dawn got sick after this, and we had to slow down, letting the other team pass. After Dawn recovered, bronwyn hit a huge wall. She slowed, and the gap widened.
Next checkpoint we not only closed the gap, but took the lead. We had to complete a puzzle, and we did it in record puzzle time.
We ran to our second last checkpoint with some hustle, with Bronwyn still on the bike. We had to answer some questions regarding a story, and we failed, giving us a 5 minute trip to the sin bin again. Lucky, so did the second, third and fourth place teams. We ran for the home stretch and reached our last checkpoint.
We than had to carry a canoe around a lake. Stupidly, we carryed it over our heads for the first 3/4, allowing the other team to not only catch up, but take a fairly large lead. We switched to carrying it by the edges, but it was almost too late.
We made our lap, put the canoe back in its place and started on our last run. Our hands had to stay together in a rope, except for the biker.
We ran hard, passed the other team half way on the last trek. We never looked back, and took the race in 2 hours and 56 minutes. I am the first grade 10 to win this race in its 3 year history, something I am pretty proud of!
All in all, a good day
