I really miss trail running. I get in some good hikes when I can, and of course mtb-ing, but there's something about trail running that keeps your senses alive. Probably the constantly changing and twisting terrain, the lack of a numbingly metronome-like pace, and the vigilance not to twist your ankle (I run on some very narrow trails in the forest where sometimes I have to run with my arms in front of my face to push away the branches).

God, I miss that.

I've been running a lot of trails lately, and actually went on a road run the other day. I couldn't believe how much easier road running is than trail running. Something about the terrain, hills, descents, and maintaining constant pace is exhilerating. Not to mention the sweat and dirt.

You really do like being outdoors and getting messy, don't you? Does your fiance/boyfriend share your passion for the outdoors as well? That would be pretty cool if you were able to trail run with him, ride singletrack together (says the guy who can't do any of that with his spouse).

I know about only 3 couples who actually do any kind of working out/training together. I wonder why it is so uncommon?

We're racing together later this year. Yeah, he throws on a headlamp and hydration pack and goes night hiking and trail running with me. He and I ride singletrack every saturday-breakfast at the Starlight diner for pancakes-and sunday-afterwards we go to crackerbarrel and eat fried chicken. I'm picking up his new road bike this weekend (Felt F60)as a wedding gift.

I've even gotten him out on the real rock, and he's gonna be outclimbing me soon-he flashed a 5.10 a couple of weekends ago! We're a pair of freaks, and we're getting married at the top of Pinnacle mountain February 18, 2004. I'm stoked.

It's hard for most couples to be a team. Riding and running together require a high level of trust and the ability to enjoy yourself and each other. Udually someone is always pushing the other person harder than they're comfortable with. We're encouraging though. We take the attitude of "We're not at work, and this is supposed to be fun." And we remember that it's not a competition, and learn from each other. He helped me master a trackstand, and I helped him tackle off camber rock gardens. It's give and take.

Wow, sounds great (he says enviously).

And congrats on the upcoming nuptials! Best wishes for a long, happy, and healthy future together!

PS: You're getting married and then 3 days later doing the adventure race? I hope he's on your team.

Well, we weren't able to compete b/c my team mate was having some knee problems, and he didn't want to "waste everyones time and money." Ahh well, no problem. Good news: I'm fresh for another week of training. Tomorrow is a local 38 mile Wye mountain road ride with a 6 mile run and climb up Pinnacle thrown in the middle.

I did get in 2 mountain bike rides and 3 hikes/runs this week despite the wedding stuff.

It went great!!! The only thing that feels different, is I have a ring on. I'll have pics soon, I hope. It was a good day/experience altogether.
