Multi-Sport RacingTriathalons and Adventure Racing have been sweeping the nation at a phenomenal rate. Multi-Sport Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Learn all about this sport, post photos, meet potential teammates or brag about your performance in a race.
Okay guys, we have to get Sarah to tell her results from the race she did in Oklahoma City. I already know but I don't want to spoil it for her. I just want to drag her in here to tell us about it. Pics... we want more pics too! Come on Sarah!
Also are Sarah and Ryan (mitsuman) doing the Fort Smith race together? If so, GO GET' EM GUYS!
JP, we don't have races like that in Chicago. They look like a blast. The best we can do is the 'muddy buddy' run and bike races. Here's a list of the races within 3 hour drive of here. Unfortunately, the 2 in Chicago are pure urban racing, and the next closest ones in WI are 18 and 24 hours (too long for me!). I've tried to get teams for the Wild Scallion, but no one want to seriously try it.
PATHFINDER CHALLENGE: June 27-28 (24 hour) Kettle Moraine State Forest, LaGrange, WI. Land navigation, mountain biking, paddling, trekking, horseback riding. www.pathfinderchallenge.com or 847-864-1685
In a Nutshell: Pathfinder is the oldest adventure race in the Midwest and the second-oldest in the U.S. It's close to home, offers beautiful terrain and includes horseback riding.
In a Nutshell: A mid-length race, this is perfect for teams looking to take the next step up from sprint length races. It boasts two fixed rope sections and mountain biking on trails and tandem kayaking legs.
ROCK THE RACE: Aug. 6 (8-10 hour). Rockford, IL. Trail run, bushwhack, canoe, mountain bike, climbing/rappelling/traverse on ropes, orienteering. www.rocktherace.org or 815-489-1120
In a Nutshell: The Rock hosts the disciplines in 5-6 zones. A zone consists of a particular park, area of a park or forest preserve with multiple disciplines in each. Novice teams will be required to complete a minimum number of disciplines per zone. Those that are "going for the gold" and hope to win, place or show in the event will have the opportunity to complete more disciplines per zone. The team with the most disciplines completed within the 10-hour time limit will be declared the winner.
WILD SCALLION URBAN ADVENTURE RACE: Sept. 20 (6-8 hour) Chicago, IL. Biking, running, navigating, stair-climbing and the triad (one person each on bike, scooter and in-line skates). www.urbanadventureracing.com or 312-464-3300
In a Nutshell: The Scallion was born from its Papa the Wild Onion Urban Adventure Race. This takes teams all over the city. From climbing the stairs in Chicago's famous skyscrapers to navigating through the streets, teams must stay together and figure out the fastest course to the finish line. The Scallion promises a lot of laughs and great city views. It is a perfect race for first -timers as it requires minimal gear and you are never too far away from a Starbucks!
In a Nutshell: The original urban adventure race, the Onion was created to offer a true urban adventure in a great city. The Wild Onion is a challenging 100+ mile course that rolls through the city streets, lake and river and suburban forest preserves. It is twenty-four hours of urban excitement that leads you through unchartered areas of the city. The course, albeit top secret has been known to climb the Sears Tower stairs up and down, navigate the under ground tunnel system, kayak and coaster on the lake for miles, cycle on trail near O'Hare Airport and even ride the train with bikes! It is a great race for teams looking to take the next step from sprint races. One thing that is guaranteed, if you don't respect the Wild Onion...it'll make you cry!
