Default Signed up for a HIM

Well I've signed up and paid for a half ironman in August that I've always had in my mind as the goal race.

Well I thought, stuff it and signed up. Paid so I also had that other incentive to train hard.

Got ~5mths so is going to be a push, but I think I can easily get there.

The goal at this stage is simply to finish.

Totally pumped.

Have to seriously practice getting nutrition in and right for so a long race.

August here will be good temperature coming off winter so that will help.

Hell yes! You've so got this. It'll be so awesome for you to finally be in the race we've always watched and heard about.

Up for an Easter run? We're so excited for our trip away. I was ready for a break after 2 weeks back

Train hard bro.

http://www.capricornhalf.com/

Its in my home town. So I know the roads and the beach but not too sure about the run loop. Really enjoying the longer trainings. Been getting in more open water swims so that is helping. Bike is going to be the weakest link. My running is getting so much better. I'd initially thought I'd end up walking to finish the distance but I think I'm going to power through the run.

Some days are better than others but overall really enjoying the journey.

Thanks for dropping by.

Ran 17km yesterday (10.6miles) which is the longest run I've done. Today I'm in a world of hurt.

Got a recovery week this week so body is looking forward to that.

In a sick kinda way I like the pain.

You rock! I'm thinking of a HIM next year but after yesterday's 6 mile run I was thinking, "what makes me think I can run 13.1??????"

Had my longest ride so far yesterday. Headed out and was feeling great did 45km then turned around........ only to realise that I'd been riding wind assisted all that time. Then came the slight uphill with a huge head wind. Might as well been walking back.

It took so much strength to get all that way home. I would have quit so many times if I wasn't so far from home.

Today the legs are fried. It hurts to sit. Hurts to stand.

I did 90km. The whole way back I was thinking that what makes me think I can do a half marathon after this ride.

I'm about half way through the program so i'm sure I can do it. But OMG its going to HURT!

Gotta love it

Update: I've decided that finishing would be a huge gamble on the day so was able to talk my brother sam into doing the run leg. Changed my registration over and thats that.

So now its time to smash more swimming and can rack up some serious bike miles.

Going to be fun doing it as a team.

Well, I did my first century ride this morning (metric that is). Felt suprisingly easy for how far it is.

Legs are fried but a good fried.

3 weeks left.

Totally pumped.

Yeah, I don't hang out many places with work and training.

I'm looking forward to the race being over and having some spare time back. Just for a while before something fills that space.

Might do some lifting.

Looks like race should be coming up soon. How are you feeling going into it?

Little bit scared. The last month has been screwed up with my wife's nana's passing and travelling out of town. Less than ideal last month.

I'm going to do a ride on the weekend then maybe 2 or 3 swims before travelling down to the race on thursday. I know doing too much now to compensate will really hurt me next week so am being careful of that.

I'm going by the fact that its the accumulation of all the training that counts not neccessarily the last weeks. Hopefully.

Will let you all know how it went.

8 days!

You can't get strong in a couple of weeks, and you can't lose it in a couple of weeks. We all know you're going to do great. Good luck.

Report: (its a bit long but then again it was a long day )

My brother and I entered the half ironman as a team of two. I swam and biked then he did the half marathon.

Swim was my biggest concern since my last triathlon I had a bit of a moment while in the water. I'd done the training and had open water experience coming into this one but 1.9km swim is still a long way. I did some light swimming on course 2 days earlier and felt good going into the day. Warmed up 20min before our wave left and felt really comfortable when the gun went off. Started towards the back as I self seeded myself in the back of the pack. By the first turning buoy I was in the middle of the pack and then the pack spread out nicely. Before half way I had overtaken people steadily and made a conscious thought to not kick too hard to save the legs for later. I also started getting the back of the packers from the wave that left 5min before mine so that really helped the motivation. It was hard to site the buoys as the waves (not really waves but swell) kept stopping me from seeing the buoys easily. Finished slightly slower then had planned but we were swimming against current (race directors mistake) and even the pro's were 8 min slower then last year.

Had a 300-400m run into transition and got ready for the bike. Haven't seen official splits but I think it was about 7min from standing up in the water to getting on the bike. Not too bad but I didn't want to rush anything and pay for it later.

Bike started out well. It was a out and back loop done five times. First lap went really well and it seemed like it was going to be a easy ride and I was sitting above my planned race pace and it was easy. The road was really rough and sucked all the momentum out of the bike. If you stopped pedalling for 2 pushes then you'd roll to a stop. The slight up hill on the way back and the breeze made for a hellish ride. The first laps were busy will heaps of people on course but by the time I'd finished it had thinned out nicely. I finished in 3hr 24min for 92.8km and had planned on a 3:30 so even though it was tough I still did what I'd planned.

Nutrition was probably were I feel down. I'd been practicing taking 2 hammer gels and 2 bottles of heed plus some water on the ride and had been going well. Since it had been 3 hours since breakfast before the start of our wave I was already 3 hours short of fuel. Swim was no worries. Bike was really tough. Went through the planned gels and started to feel a bit funny in the stomach so didn't pop anymore. The last couple of laps took all the mental energy I could muster to keep going and not stopping and throwing the bike into the bushes, but kept going because I knew sam was waiting and I wanted to give him as much time as I could to do the run.

Rolled into transition and even was able to run the bike over to the racks. Swapped the ankle tag to sam and told him to have fun. I took off whatever gear I could and stumbled over to the spot our supporters had picked to watch the run leg. I collapsed in a heap and asked for food. Sister took off the get food while my brothers finacee gave me a left over sandwich. Sister was gone 45ish minutes for food and I could still barely sit up on my own. Father came over and then left to find something for me to eat. He has 2 min and brought back food. I was half way through that before sister got back. Guess she choose that slow isle. :-)

Sam smashed the run for a 2hr 19min half marathon and that was his first half marathon and minimal training he kepts telling us.

Crossed for a 6hr 46min race.

Was an awesome day and was good to get to sit and watch the runners and soak up the race day atmosphere.

I'm never riding that road again. I can still barely sit normally 3 days later.

Congrats on sticking with it! I can't imagine swimming anywhere near that far with swells and against a current.

Next year???
