Default Indoor Bike Trainer

Does anyone have an indoor bike trainer or roller? Any recommendations? I'm looking to spend less than $300.

I have a basic blackburn trakstand magtrainer.
Blackburn / 2007 / Trainers

It works fine. I put the bike on it and I can ride.

It has 3 resistance levels. I notice more from the gearing of the cycle.

I think it is loud. Maybe they all are.

I know some have a remote so you can change resistance without getting off.

I don't use it very much as it bores me to tears

It was pretty cheap if I remember though.

Og.

Um… yes. Was right around that price. Fluid, good resistance, and every other fact escapes me now but hopefully with more sleep later today I can find the info on it. Is great, love it.

We also have rollers, but I've yet to use it yet.

I was never able to use rollers except set up in the doorway and mostly falling over sideways. But that was many years ago when I was younger and in better shape - oh wait, that doesn't sound encouraging. That said, my husband was able to conquer the rollers at the time, so it was probably just me.

we had a rear-wheel trainer at the time too - very low tech compared to what they have now - but it was pretty smooth. I think all the resistance was from gearing rather than the trainer.

I have a Travel Trac trainer. Bought it for around $200 3 years ago from Performance Bike. I've put about 400 miles on it and it still works like new. It can be pretty loud but the smoother the surface on your bike tire, the less noise it creates.

I like how it folds up and is easy to store. It's also easy to mount/un-mount the bike from the trainer itself. I highly recommend getting a front wheel block for added stability. They run about $20.

Final note: On my trainer I had to replace the stock rear axle with one that comes with the trainer because the stock axle doesn't fit the mounting hardware. The trainer only shipped with 1 axle so I had to call Travel Trac for an extra so we can use my wife's bike as well. It was easy to get it and they didn't charge for it.

we have a Cyclops and I like it more than I thought I would. It's not quiet but I don't think any of them are. ODB got it cheaper by finding it on a bike club message board-someone who wanted to be rid of it. You might be able to get a "better" one for your same budget that way.

I've put about half my lifetime on a Cyclops fluid trainer and love it MSRP $330

But, if I were to buy a new trainer right now, it'd be a Giant Cyclotron Auto for $230. Why? They both have progressive resistance so you don't have to mess with remote or adjusting resistance. Just shift gears to up the resistance AND it's has a really cool quick release to aid installing your bike. Hands down, the easiest trainer I've ever used. It's the one we use at the shop for fits, even.

This is the one I currently use...

Nashbar Trainer

Very inexpensive but well built, no issues so far. Plus has remote resistance adjustment.

Rollers for me. Been riding them for over 10 years. Started on a Nashbar brand set with large drums, then "upgraded" to a Tacx folding set with smaller drums.

Rollers definitely help you improve your handling skills, balance and pedal stroke. I don't use a resistance unit, but those are also an option.

Rollers definitely make riding indoors more interesting than other trainers, but riding indoors still sucks....
