Decided today that i'm going to start training for a tri but have to find one yet.
I swam during high school and used to bike a bit but the running is pretty new.
Planning on starting with low intensity and try to increase volume over a few weeks before upping intensity.
Had a very quick look at a site linked in another thread and seems the baseline before beginning a tri based program is 30min run, 30min swim and 40min bike.
This might take a few weeks as I'm very new to all this.
Going to get a bike early next year after moving so for now its going to be stationary bikes.
Any tips or things that the vets wish they knew when they started would be great.
Thanks Josh
P.S Anything Eric can offer about tri's in australia would be awesome.

I wish I knew it was like crack...only more expensive. Welcome to the TerrorDome!
Seriously--you're going to LOVE it. I went to www.beginnertriathlete.com and got advice, information, background, experience and trainning plans. It's all good.
You're on the right track--Don't ramp up too quickly. Most people say 10% per week increases--maximum.
Also, www.active.com allows you to look up events by state. It's a good place to start looking. Start with a Sprint or Olympic distance (not that much more) to get your feet wet and get some experience.
Josh - all I can say is that there are a few really good threads on here about getting going into triathlon. Read up.
Australian's are in a league of their own in triathlon. The best of the best come from Oz and NZ, and that trickles down to the age group level. I got absolutely demolished in my race there, but I still had a blast. Just make sure you go out there to have some fun, don't get hung up on your placing.
Also, I think one of the first purchases I had to make was a wetsuit, since the water here is chilly. But you'll not have to worry about that at all, since all water there is really warm. So you could use that money and apply it to a bike. Make sure you get fit well for a bike, and you'll be in good shape man.
Go have some fun, and enjoy the journey!

Going to see if there's a olympic distance tri held somewhere about mid next year as something to go for.
The place i'm moving next year as a half iron man each year so maybe one long day in the future might do that. Lets say 5yr plan.
I'm really looking forward to training for a goal or purpose rather then just yay i lifted more today. Getting rather boring and need some focus to continue.
Josh, great to have another Aussie triathlete on board.
This is my first day back posting for a month, so good timing. As Eric and Fish have said there is some good stuff on this forum to get you started, but don't be shy in asking questions - not matter how absurd they are, as the triathletes here are all keen on helping. But then, as an experienced JPF'er this wouldn't surprise you.
Where are you moving to? I could narrow it down to less than 10 considering it has a HIM, but just interested.
I will look forward to reading about your progress.

Josh - a brick is when you combine workouts, like doing an hour bike ride and jumping off and going straight for a run as you would in a race. It can be really any combo (swim/run, swim/bike, bike/run) but is usually a bike/run.
Now go try one and get back to us
