Default New to all this

Decided today that i'm going to start training for a tri but have to find one yet.

I swam during high school and used to bike a bit but the running is pretty new.

Planning on starting with low intensity and try to increase volume over a few weeks before upping intensity.

Had a very quick look at a site linked in another thread and seems the baseline before beginning a tri based program is 30min run, 30min swim and 40min bike.

This might take a few weeks as I'm very new to all this.

Going to get a bike early next year after moving so for now its going to be stationary bikes.

Any tips or things that the vets wish they knew when they started would be great.

Thanks Josh

P.S Anything Eric can offer about tri's in australia would be awesome.

I wish I knew it was like crack...only more expensive. Welcome to the TerrorDome!

Seriously--you're going to LOVE it. I went to www.beginnertriathlete.com and got advice, information, background, experience and trainning plans. It's all good.

You're on the right track--Don't ramp up too quickly. Most people say 10% per week increases--maximum.

Also, www.active.com allows you to look up events by state. It's a good place to start looking. Start with a Sprint or Olympic distance (not that much more) to get your feet wet and get some experience.

Dude...you are sooooooooo going to love this!

Josh - all I can say is that there are a few really good threads on here about getting going into triathlon. Read up.

Australian's are in a league of their own in triathlon. The best of the best come from Oz and NZ, and that trickles down to the age group level. I got absolutely demolished in my race there, but I still had a blast. Just make sure you go out there to have some fun, don't get hung up on your placing.

Also, I think one of the first purchases I had to make was a wetsuit, since the water here is chilly. But you'll not have to worry about that at all, since all water there is really warm. So you could use that money and apply it to a bike. Make sure you get fit well for a bike, and you'll be in good shape man.

Go have some fun, and enjoy the journey!

Thanks guys.

Going to see if there's a olympic distance tri held somewhere about mid next year as something to go for.

The place i'm moving next year as a half iron man each year so maybe one long day in the future might do that. Lets say 5yr plan.

I'm really looking forward to training for a goal or purpose rather then just yay i lifted more today. Getting rather boring and need some focus to continue.

Will start reading.

Thanks.

Thanks Fish some people had interesting tips.

Had a swim yesterday for the first time in years, aerobic conditioning will come, stroke still there, my fast twitch muscles are not much use to me.

Did half km at an easy pace to get used to being in the water.

Reading Eric HIM log and will start actually writting a swim program before i get to the pool over just swimming.

Josh, great to have another Aussie triathlete on board.

This is my first day back posting for a month, so good timing. As Eric and Fish have said there is some good stuff on this forum to get you started, but don't be shy in asking questions - not matter how absurd they are, as the triathletes here are all keen on helping. But then, as an experienced JPF'er this wouldn't surprise you.

Where are you moving to? I could narrow it down to less than 10 considering it has a HIM, but just interested.

I will look forward to reading about your progress.

Never saw your location before. Score.

Josh - a brick is when you combine workouts, like doing an hour bike ride and jumping off and going straight for a run as you would in a race. It can be really any combo (swim/run, swim/bike, bike/run) but is usually a bike/run.

Now go try one and get back to us

Thanks eric I thought it was a ride into run back to ride from what i gathered of Rachel cosgroves blog

Question regarding bike. I won't be even looking at a road bike until i'm working next year but will a mountain bike get me by for that time?

Is there an easy way to make a mountain bike more road friendly?

Going to visit the olds in a few weeks so hope to fit my old bike in the car and bring it back here for some training.

Been reading your (Eric's) HIM log. Insane dude, but gets me so pumped to go train. Don't want to do to much too soon so have to hold myself back.

Thanks everyone for being so supportive.

You can ride an MTB for tri training. You can get slicks or semi slicks (tires) for road riding and your bike will glide easier on the road.
