Default First tri of the season is today

Hey all,

This forum is so quiet, I thought I may as well muck it up a bit. I leave in about 30 minutes for my first triathlon this season. It's only a Sprint distance, so 500M swim, 20K bike and 5K run. I know I can handle the distances, but my training has been lax, to say the least. Hopefully, I won't crash and burn as my body teaches me a lesson!

Now that I've taken up weights in a more serious way, I can see how it will be difficult to follow a typical tri training routine. I'm kind of torn between the two. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

I'll post later with the day's dirty details.

I haven't had any experience with the issue you are describing as I have never done a tri, so I can't offer much there. But I wanted to wish you luck today and looking forward to hearing your results.

Well, I survived the day yesterday. It was a fun event - complete with the typical coordination snafus.

The race was scheduled to start at 9AM with my swim wave taking off about 40 minutes later. Unfortunately, I didn't get in the water until almost 10:30! In the middle of the swim, I realized I was really hungry and hadn't eaten enough.

I took my time on the first transition and forced down a gel pack and some water. The bike leg was two laps around the course. Did I thoroughly prepare by riding, or at least driving, the course in advance! No. It really wasn't that bad. A few hills kicked my butt the first lap. I felt better the second lap, but the last hill right near the end hit me pretty hard.

The run course was unknown to me as well. It was kind of a trail run thru the park on grass/dirt/mulch - so a little bumpy in spots. I started out strong, but quickly 'lost' my legs and had to walk for 50 yards or so. Then I toughed it out and only walked a little with each water stop. The finish of this race is a killer, though. There is a loooooooonnnnnnnng sloping hill - at least a 1/4 of a mile long leading to the finish. I only made it about halfway up before I had to walk - again 50 yards or so. Man, that hill kicked my ass. But I couldn't finish the race like a weenie, so I managed a respectable jog to the finish.

Since I always forget to mark the splits on my watch, I didn't bother timing myself. It's disappointing that the results have not been posted yet. I know I didn't set any records. But, I've established a starting point from which to improve. My goal is to participate in three more events between now and October - I haven't picked the specific events yet, but I hope at least one of them is an Olympic level event. I'm going to have to be a lot more prepared for that!

Thanks everyone for the supportive posts and enthusiasm. Again, this is a great place to share fitness info...ya'll are a lot of fun! Maybe I'll update later with my embarrassing results!

I've never done a tri.. but I remember what it felt going fencing on days I had swimming class just before.. I was HELL! swiming really takes alot out of a person.. I admire you and every other tri-er!

Nicely done, I think every tri has to have a long uphill at the end, you know, just for good measure.

Keep us posted on when you get the results. We'll all be anxious to see your times, etc. Good work on getting it done.

OK...if you're that interested in my results, I'll just suck it up and lay it out there!

Age group: 44-49
I finished 19th out of 24 in my age group
500M Swim: 14:43
(my worst event despite the fact I swim on a consistent basis)
20K Bike: 46:09
(I rode a mountain bike with slick tires for my first three triathlons; now I'm riding a 25 yr. old Raleigh road bike - I wanna new bike!)
5K Run: 30:04
(My slowest running leg in all 5 triathlons I've done - my excuse is that my training has been seriously curtailed due to a groin injury. But I'm really almost over it and just need to get in more mileage and do more bike/run bricks.)

There you have it. With transitions, total time of 1:37:41. There is another sprint event on Memorial Day. We'll see what kind of improvements I can make.

Thanks BFG - truer words were never spoken! I'd hate to think I could get worse! I told my buddy the only way I'll ever finish in the top three in my age group is when I'm 80 yrs. old!
