The day is dragging: Let's talk about Tri equipment!
Ok all you triathlon veterans out there.
What do you have for shorts and such. What could you not live with out?
Any recomendations to an aspiring triathlete?

So, now you're 96 cals short. You're now in starvation mode. Doomed.

I want a pair of tri-shorts this year. And some good sunscreen is a must.

I have a pair of TYR tri shorts that are fantastic. Colorado weather typically requires a wetsuit, and I just got one at the end of last season on clearance. It's a Quintana Roo Sleeveless, it's badass. I love it.
This year, I have some aero bars and a tri jersey on the menu. I also want some good cold weather running gear.

I have tri-shorts that I also use for adventure racing (can't remember the brand).
I usually just wear a Target/walmart short sleeve nylon shirt.
I use a buff headband.
I also have a shorty wetsuit that I bought a while back for winter adventure racing that I could use for cold weather swims but haven't needed it yet.

I was thinking tri-shorts might be a good idea. I'm planning on a pretty short entry level tri, but having something I can swim, bike and run in comfortably might be a good idea. Although they look very tight and I am shy.

Be Bold!!!
Doesn't matter anyway, it's what everyone else is wearing and the padding makes it look like a diaper.

I was figuring worst case scenario if I hate tri, I could still use them as bike shorts!

I did my first tri in a speedo.
If you're not sure, this might be one way to go.

My very first tri was in 1985. I wore a speedo in the pool (yes we actually swam laps in a pool) than I put on some running shorts for the run and bike (the bike was last on this race because the town couldn't understand what the hell we were doing and wouldn't let the organizers lay out the course properly). We didn't have padded bike shorts back in the day. I also had to borrow a bike helmet since I didn't own one at the time and they were required. It was about 15 years later before I did my next one.

Rob, look at those pylons! You've put on some muscle since the summit two years ago.

Thanks, JP. I had been doing a lot of leg focused stuff, and it really paid off. The power of squats...

We are actually swimming ours in a pool, it's a short distance and it'll be cold outside.
Thanks for not posting pics of you in your speedo though
Speaking of helmets, I saw the classic again today. Person riding the bike with their helmet strapped dutifully....to their handle bars.
How much of a tool would you feel like if you had your helmet on your handlebars, had an accident and suffered some sort of head injury. That would be worse than not taking the helmet.

Og,
The tri shorts are the best investment to start...like you said, you can wear them for the swim, bike and run. This was my first pair:

I've never had the money to buy a wetsuit. They are more for buoyancy and performance than warmth (so I've heard). I could use help in the buoyancy department, but none of the triathlons I've done here in Texas have allowed them anyway.
Hopefully a new bike is in my future!

Yeah I will most likely pick a pair of these up in some description or another.
Buoyancy. Back in the day I would jump into the pool and I would maybe touch bottom, maybe not. Now I jump in and I sink like a rock. I can easily sit on the bottom of the pool. It's quite humorous to me.
I like my Trek, but it is a mountain bike and I wonder how much it affects me on the road. How much faster would I be on a roadbike? Just in general, not even in terms of the Tri.
Winter is finally letting go, so it's warm enough to cycle if you get it in early enough. Only made it out once a week so far, and pretty short distances, but I will boost these up as it gets warmer. Even on my 9km ride my fingers were pretty chilly when I got back.
I will also incorporate rides to work again as well. Work is pretty close to the distance I need to be able to preform at for my baby tri.
Og.

The speed difference I've observed between a mountain bike on the road and a road bike is somewhere around 5 mph when riding alone. Of course with that extra speed on the road bike you can jump into a peloton (not allowed during tri's) and add another 5 mph or so. Sorry, don't have a kph calculation in front of me.

Google says 5mph is about 8kmh. That's actually a large difference. Wish I could afford a road bike

It depends on where your swimming. H2O was in the low 60s when I did mine in May in PA. One guy got in the H2O and it sucked his | |
