Multi-Sport RacingTriathalons and Adventure Racing have been sweeping the nation at a phenomenal rate. Multi-Sport Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Learn all about this sport, post photos, meet potential teammates or brag about your performance in a race.
So the first time I got back into the pool as an adult I couldn't even complete a 25m length. I quickly got decent enough to finish the 25m and could usually pair em up to do sets of 50m, but never really more than that.
I always enjoyed swimming, pretty sure I sucked at it as I always tired very fast.
As I have mentioned I have decided to enter a sprint triathlon which will be a 750m pool swim, 15km bike ride and a 3km run.
Following my last model of success I have started reading forums and a few books on triathlons and swimming.
So I started swimming again last week and after reading the small tidbits on swimming and energy conservation that I have read so far I did sets of 75m today. This is a pretty big deal for me, but at the end of the sets I did a single set of 150. I was tired after but not as tired as I have been. I have never swam six lengths in a row before.
It is scheduled for May 29th, although they have yet to open up registration. Either way. 750m should be achievable. I mean I can swim the 750m now but I am not sure on how bad my time would be
For the most part my legs aren't being utilized during the swim so I will hopefully have decent endurance left in my legs after I get out of the water.
Remember, it's all about efficiency in the water. Practice long smooth strokes. See how far you can get with each stroke. I'll see if I can find you a list of stroke improvement drills on the web somewhere since they are hard to explain without pictures.
Check out Total Immersion swimming. I just checked out the book from my library, and it nothing else, it will give you a few good pointers to keep an eye on in the water (including how far you get with each stroke - ala Joe).
Infact I had meant to mention the Total immersion stuff in the original post. I haven't done any drills, but reading about the concepts as such and working on such things as not kicking a million times a second, body rotation, thumb to thigh and stroke efficiency have improved my swimming immensly. I have yet to seriously time any of my swims, and they may be slower than I used to swim, but I bet I can complete 6 lengths alot faster than I used to
The library is a good idea on the book, I hadn't thought of that.
Nice work OG. You'll find you pick up swimming really quick. I think of lots of stuff to releive teh boredom, like fantasy football, or how good it's going to feel to get out on the race course.
Once you get more comfortable and get a more solid base, you can start doing drills and sets too, to break up your workout. I love doing reverse pyramids - swim 500m, rest 50 seconds, swim 400m, rest 40s, swim 300m, rest 30s and so on to 100m. Stuff like that will surely break up your workout.
Or you could just try to invent stuff. I've had some pretty good ideas while swimming
Good work, you're going to be a stud triathlete in no time!
I would say I am doing little more than logging meteres in the pool right now, but better than nothing I guess.
I have currently scaled back pool time to two days a week so I can move RT up to 3 days a week and try and fit a running regime in as well. UGH! I need to get bike time in still. Good times.
