I went to the library tonight after work and checked out Power Yoga for dummies. Since I'm a dummy and I want to learn power yoga, I figure it's a good fit.
Thanks T. I'm learning about the history of yoga right now and then on to the actual routines. I'm anxious to give it a go. Have you ever tried any form?
I haven't G but I really want to. Just haven't taken the time to yet. I know a few people that do it and love it though. Let me know how you do with it. I'll have to start doing it. Might help with the tension in my upper back and neck as well.
Hey, GR, yoga is one of those things I've been curious about, too. I hope you post all about your experiences. There's nothing like stories from someone who's tried it.

I absolutely will RB. Like I said, I'm reading up on it now and it sounds absolutely fabulous, but then so do alot of things when you're just reading about them.
I'll definitely keep you both posted in this thread.
Well, unfortunately reading Power Yoga always seemed to turn into, as my wife says, a "Power Nap" LOL LOL I could never get into it and never even gave it a shot. Had to take the book back to the library. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I do think someday I'd like to take a class vs. reading a book on the subject.
Usually, you can find yoga clubs just about anywhere. My mil has done yoga to help with a condition called Essential Tremors -- it's the same malady that Katherine Hepburn suffered from. Apparently, yoga really helps with the tremors.
btw, nice avatar there bro!!!

Hey gymrat, not sure if you remember me from the old days but I thought I'd chime in here. I recently started taking yoga CLASS at school. As in I go in at 6:30am tuesday mornings to a registered academic yoga class where we have our yoga sessions and learn about the practice and take tests etc. It was probly the best/humbling thing I have ever done in my fitness life. I was instantly addicted, good luck, and I know you will enjoy it.
Part of the start of my Fitness journey a year ago was doing Yoga on a fairly regular basis. I found it really helped me be more aware of my body and helped with easing some of the aches and pains I was dealing with at the time. I used the Yoga Zone videos. They were pretty good and had a range from beginner to Power Yoga. Even had a couple of relaxation ones that were pretty good.

Hey gymrat, if you are going to signup for a yoga class, try to find one where the classes are rather small and ask if the instructor aligns their students - this is important especially if you haven't done yoga before. Other than that, I agree with TheSteve 100%
two sites w/ good classes are : Yoga Today and www.elsiesyogakula.com (<-I think that's the one...).
They're free, usually and hour long and previously were download-able on iTunes. Most of the classes on iTunes are a lot shorter and I find I need a good 45-60mins.
It took me a long time to "come around" to yoga. I justified by saying, 'well at least it's bodyweight resistance and good stretching.' But I only did it as a "side dish" to any other training, or on an "off day" in other words.
I've done Ashtanga and Hatha b/c those seem to be the most popular & basic; plus Iyvengar (sp??) and Kundalini.
By FAR and away the biggest determining factor of what I'm going to "get out" of a class is the instructor. And I guess in the first couple of years, the instructors I happened to seek out were dolts & not experienced. ("THIS is what yoga is?!!!" I thought.) So, like I said, took me a long time to come around.
Namaste!!
Hey, that Yogatoday is pretty good! I'd never done any Yoga before an hour ago, and I felt like I could do most everything in the video. An hour seems long (to me), and there were a few things that just weren't happening, but all in all... I like it.
I used to get FitTV, but only turned on Namaste Yoga to oogle at the hostesses, but boy do I regret it now! Wish I'd done some of that stuff!
Thanks for posting it. Hopefully I'll log on regularly... I'd like to be a bit more flexible.
I took a semester of yoga at the local community college. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. There was one time we had a substitute teacher and she had us sit & listen to whale noises and stuff, so that was a bit much for me but I really liked the way our regular teacher ran the show. I felt like I got my money's worth, and now that I know the proper way to do all the poses, it's easy for me to do it at home on my own. Although, savasana just isn't the same without some hypnotic monotone voice telling you to relaaaaax... right as I would doze off some older lady in my class would start snoring and wake me up.

The class I was in was mostly female, ages 18 or so on up to I dunno how old. About a handful of flexible blond cheerleader types. There was one cute guy, and one older guy that was there with his wife, but the rest of the class was female. Might not be a bad place to pick up chicks I'd imagine.
