I should take a poll on how many people of the forum use music while lifting to help their focus and drive. I am really into music but over the past couple years never went out and bought an mp3 for some reason. It would probably be better than hearing people gossiping and hearing sports center blare over the gym tv. I'm considering trying it. How do you all feel about music promoting greater positive results in the mind and body while training as compared to plain random background noise which may be distracting?
It's a MUST for me!!! It's part of the experience and the music makes a BIG difference in how I lift! If it's the right song, I've got more in me.
In fact, I was thinking just today of creating a thread to ask what people thought is the BEST setup is for music in the gym. My first MP3 player was stolen from my car when it got broken in to and my new one is kind of crumby. I'd LOVE to hear crisp, clear music of my chosing when I go into the weight room. Is my best alternative a HOME GYM!?!
I like it when I lift, but lately it's not a neccesity. Sometimes I want it, others not. Interesting, because for years I couldn't lift without my tunes. Now, its not as important, although it certainly helps pass the time when you are resting.
When I am not in the mood, though, the right song can really get me motivated.
billy joel albums:
storm front
the stranger
52nd street
the nylon curtain
i listen to those every time i lift. don't know why, but i just started to and i haven't stopped

I originally started bringing my own selection music to the gym to drown out the music that the Gym played. I had no idea that this would raise the intensity of my work out to the extent that it did. It defiantly was huge boost. It is important for me to change up the music every so often to keep the initial effect it had when I first started bringing my own music. If you lift by your self this is defiantly helpful.
I find that listening to good tunes 30 minutes before training helps get in the mood.
If I'm gonna hit the heavy bag I may watch a couple of MMA fights on video with the sound off and some hiphop or rock.
Messing with a portable player in the gym got to be troublesome but psyching up for some intense training with music really does help.

Who has worked out in an upscale club that has elevator music playing in the morning? Depressed Mode man! Music is key. Working out to silence sucks, too. Find music that does three things: 1) Makes you feel confident, 2) Makes you feel energetic, and 3) Makes you focus without distractions from outside and within. I recently hit a new dead lift 2 rep max of 455 jamming out to the Allman Brothers Band, "One Way Out," off of The Filmore Concerts, Live at the Filmore East 1971...one of the best live albums ever done. Peace.
I'm like Kaiser, sometimes I'm in the mood, sometimes not. But since I workout in my home gym I've got complete control. Sometimes some GnR "welcome to the jungle" or other songs along that hard, fast pace.
I guess I'm truly in a tiny minority -- I'd prefer silence over music. Nothing but my thoughts, the sound of the weights and my own breath. Of course I rarely get that -- my gym usually plays some hits of the 80s sort of stuff, and I keep getting distracted with thoughts of "even back when I was in high school this song really sucked. Nothing's changed."
I guess because I'm a musician I don't care for music as a background, unless I'm driving or the activity is truly mindless. Working out requires enough attention that I don't want to be distracted by music, and when I'm listening to my favorite music then I don't want to be distracted by other activities.

I don't like any music when I'm doing weights.. but I don't mind background music.. I don't hear it really.
But for cardio on machines.. YES!! and I don't have enough.. I'll have to get more variety next year. Wether it's HIITs or Cross-country programs it really keeps me going. I even wonder sometimes if it's as good a training! It seems so much easier! Sometimes the words to the songs count as much as the music.
For stretching, I don't "need" it.. but it IS very pleasant. I don't do much dynamic stretching these days and on static and PNF.. it's slow.. These days Loreena Mckennitt keeps me company.
I listen to music - usually - when at the gym to drown out the stuff they're piping in. Sometimes it is oldies, which I can tolerate, sometimes it is urban stuff, once it was country, another time it was religious music.
My gym has a broadcast option for the TVs...if you have a radio you tune it to the frequency and listen. At my old gym they had sportcenter BLARING constantly. I can handle some sports, but sports 24/7? No.
At school, they'll used to put on K-Rock and just blast that. Now that K-Rock has gone all talk, i have no clue whats going to happen. When i went for my max attempt i listened to St. Anger and Enter Sandman during the rest period, then swtich to Thousand Foot Krutch's Rawkfist. For some reason that song gets me pumped. I would shake around and rock out to it for about 30 seconds, set up and pull.

Kev don't you hate those radio stations that have jocks that drone on forever. Laughing at themselves and acting stupid...Shut UP and play some f-ing music. I finally bought an MP3 player for this very reason.
