I know that many of you are well read. I was wondering if you have read or have knowledge of the best time frames for meditation. For example, is 11 minutes better than 7? 12 better than 8? I know some traditional disciplines incorporate 25 minute meditations.

I hope you are all doing well these days. The forum has been quiet for a little while. The last thread was profound, but quite a lot to process.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Meditate? Wish I did! If I could ever shut my mind down I may not need Ambien!

Hey Boodgie!!!!

HAHAHAHA....funny to find you here!

Seriously, in response to your question...

my teacher espouses 20 minutes twice a day, before breakfast and before dinner...

The scientific research I have studied on the effects of meditation support this also.

Of course, meditation is a very personal and individual experience...so this is just a beginning guideline. When I first started, I couldn't sit still very long at all before I just wanted to run out of my skin!

Oh, one more thing...If you go on retreat, don't bring your best fun guy yoga friend along if you want to concentrate at all!!!!

Lovin' you! See ya Sunday!

About 30 minutes is good although that number can vary. In addition there are various times of the day that are better to meditate than others.

I agree Chaney that sounds like a good plan.

Some people experience negative effects from meditation including facial tics, flat affect, loss of the sense of reality, feeling "spaced out", increased feelings of anxiety etc...

Meditation is a mixed bag. It has been shown scientifically to increase concentration and memory and improve mood. On the other hand it has been shown to have the negative side effects I already mentioned. It's not a one size fits all solution. If it works for you, go for it. If you end up feeling worse for it like I did find something else.

The negative effects shown were probably due to ineffective meditation methods. Meditation is one of, if not the best, thing to do for oneself. The key is to know how to meditate. Working out can be dangerous and have negative side effects if done incorrectly as does anything for that matter. The same is true with meditation.

Once my roomie absconded with my bike and joyrode it. Hit a tree. I pressed charges and got put up front of a retired judge. He believed the guy who's not my friend anymore and I was told not to let guys ride my motorcycle and he didn't have to pay more than half. I should not have agreed to meditation. Meditation can be bad.

It's less about time and more about effectiveness. If you can clear your thoughts and relax in a shorter period, then by all means.
