Goalsetting.
Since I'm a businessman, I always phrase it in business methodolgy and goal setting. Every Jan 1, I look write down my strengths and weaknesses (physically) and then write down my goals in my workout log . I write down how I can eliminate a weakness and measureable yardsticks by which to chart my progress in doing so. Then I prioritize and do program selection based on this...planning out a rough sketch for the year. If done right, and my priorities don't change (which they tend to do), by the end of the season, the weakness should be eliminated.
Adressing your question, this type of goal setting, with measureable steps along the way to the final goal tends to focus my mind on the task at hand and also break it up into smaller, more digestible, pieces. Otherwise, I would look at 'increasing long-range endurance capacity' and wonder how the hell I was going to do that.
Anyway, that's my simplistic way of getting 'into it.'
