I copied this excerpt from the Supertraining discussion group and pasted it here because I was interested in the concept of the psyche being the weak link:

"It really boils down in layman's terms to variations in speed, intensity and volume in order to stimulate the body to lift heavier and heavier weights. You can dress it up any way you want but every routine or training theory I have ever used with any success was based on that. Louie doesn't waste words or say things most people can't understand; he puts it very simply "Train what is weak and you will get stronger". The secret is in identifying what is weak, muscles, technique, psyche, etc. and honing in on making it stronger."

What do you think about that? How does "psyche as weakness" manifest itself and how do you correct it?

Goalsetting.

Since I'm a businessman, I always phrase it in business methodolgy and goal setting. Every Jan 1, I look write down my strengths and weaknesses (physically) and then write down my goals in my workout log . I write down how I can eliminate a weakness and measureable yardsticks by which to chart my progress in doing so. Then I prioritize and do program selection based on this...planning out a rough sketch for the year. If done right, and my priorities don't change (which they tend to do), by the end of the season, the weakness should be eliminated.

Adressing your question, this type of goal setting, with measureable steps along the way to the final goal tends to focus my mind on the task at hand and also break it up into smaller, more digestible, pieces. Otherwise, I would look at 'increasing long-range endurance capacity' and wonder how the hell I was going to do that.

Anyway, that's my simplistic way of getting 'into it.'

From the Webster website:

Main Entry: psych
Variant(s): also psyche /'sIk/
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): psyched; psych·ing
Etymology: by shortening
Date: 1917
1 : PSYCHOANALYZE
2 a : to anticipate correctly the intentions or actions of : OUTGUESS b : to analyze or figure out (as a problem or course of action) 'I psyched it all out by myself and decided -David Hulburd'
3 a : to make psychologically uneasy : INTIMIDATE, SCARE -pressure doesn't psych me -Jerry Quarry. Often used with out b : to make (as oneself) psychologically ready especially for performance -- often used with up --psyched herself up for the race--

back to me:

What jumps out at me is the fear of failure. Many people never try anything or push the borders because of an "I think I can't" attitude. Like the little engine that could, the "I think I CAN" strategy is a winner! I can see within myself those areas of strongholds for the "Can't" position, and I need to bring focus and attention to those just as I would in strengthening a specific muscle group.

Okay, that's my two cents worth this morning. Now back to the rat race, which is already in progress.

______________

I know it isn't relevant, but I love this quote from Gilligan's Island-
"None proclaim their innocence so loudly as the guilty" -Ginger Grant
