Default Need Help!!

I need help! I don't go to the gym. I want to work out - I don't. when I'm there - I don't know what to do and feel awkward. I love the strength and tone I get when I do workout- so why is it I have such reluctance to go? the "just do it" mode only lasts a little while. Has anyone else overcome this behavior -and if so - how??

Can you get some sessions with a trainer to show you the ropes? Is the issue that you don't want to do the work, or that you don't know how? You can also buy The New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler. It's a great guide.

Agreed - knowledge is power. Both of Kate's suggestions are good.

I believe that most of us have been in your situation at some point in our lives. I started out hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions just to get the basics. Once, I did that - I found a lot of information online but the real change came when I did Turbulence Training.

Reluctance to go to the gym is normal because most people would rather stay home and watch t.v. or do something else. For me, once I routinely "made myself go" to the gym on regular basis like Mon, Wed, Fri after work - it just became a habit (this is the key if you really want it to be a permanent part of your life - the same goes with nutrition). Some of the things that kept me going were my results and the adrenaline rush (similar to the feeling you're talking about).

I hope this helps. Have fun and good luck!

When I made my only goal for working out to be walking through the gym door, it made things a lot easier. Don't worry about goals,etc....just walk through the door and the rest will take care of itself. Yes, sometimes it feels awkward being there "too much" ..... particularly if you are older, but it sure beats sitting on the couch. Buying occasional personal training sessions from one of the staff would be one way of making it a more welcoming environment. Or try buying multiple gym memberships if it feels too awkward being in one place too much.
