Default how long to meditate?

I know that many of you are well read. I was wondering if you have read or have knowledge of the best time frames for meditation. For example, is 11 minutes better than 7? 12 better than 8? I know some traditional disciplines incorporate 25 minute meditations.

I hope you are all doing well these days. The forum has been quiet for a little while. The last thread was profound, but quite a lot to process.

Seriously, in response to your question...

my teacher espouses 20 minutes twice a day, before breakfast and before dinner...

The scientific research I have studied on the effects of meditation support this also.

Of course, meditation is a very personal and individual experience...so this is just a beginning guideline. When I first started, I couldn't sit still very long at all before I just wanted to run out of my skin!

Oh, one more thing...If you go on retreat, don't bring your best fun guy yoga friend along if you want to concentrate at all!!!!

Start out short work your way to 45-60 minutes. Don't forget walking meditation. Could you lift anywhere when you began what you lift now? Probably for the vast majority, no way.

I agree with the others. Start with whatever you can. When I first started, a few minutes of quality "silence" was all I could manage. But with time, you become aware of distractions, and it becomes easier to push them aside, and therein lies the ability to meditate longer.

I would recommend 3 times a day

Morning, afternoon, and night.

15-20 minutes each.. Keeps the fog cleared.
