Default How to check a leg kick

Kicking someone's shin can sometimes end badly as Corey Hill found out last night.

In all fairness nobody that skinny should be in the Octagon in the first place.

They should be in an eating disorder clinic.

At least now he'll not be able to run away from the glucose drip.

That had to hurt. They had Hill winning for that too.

Have no sympathy for him. His choice to starve himself to avoid fighting someone "his own size".

I didn't even know how he walked on those things, let alone throw kicks with them.

Weight cutting is part of any sport that has weight classes.

Weight cutting is not starving yourself. It's manipulating diet and hydration, and taking laxatives, for a week or two before the fight, to keep as much muscle mass as possible, while keeping the weight under the cut off for 30 sec, 24hrs before the fight.

Then re hydrating and eating loads of carbs to get back to normal.

This guy is 6'4" and fighting at 155lb. That is not cutting weight - that's starving yourself year round to avoid fighting anyone with a similar frame/reach.

You have no idea what his training and diet look like over the course of a year. It absolutely benefits him to keep his weight as low as possible in order to take advantage of his height and reach. That is consistent in all weight class sports such as wrestling, boxing, MMA, etc.

If his cardio and strength are not suffering on fight night, then he is not cutting or starving himself to an extent where his performance is suffering.

Hmmm so if he had eaten a little more normally and allowed his muscle mass and bone density to increase along with that, to the point where he had similar to that of the person facing him, and obviously more appropriate for his frame - it would not have been a benefit?

I hope you are not making the argument that his broken leg was caused by his weight cutting, because that would be...well, really, really funny.

No...I made the point that he isn't weight cutting. Maybe I didn't make it clear enough, but I thought I'd been reasonably articulate?

Weight cutting is maintaining a weight fit for your general frame. That is comfortable to allow you to do the training you need to, and allows you a healthy diet and training program.

Then... Just short of your match, you manipulate carbs, sodium(helps with hydration), laxitives and hydration to "limbo" under the nearest, lowest weight and then come back up to your normal healthy weight for the fight.

This guy starves himself, year round to maintain an abnormal and extremely unhealthy body weight for his frame, in order to enjoy a reach advantage. This then bit him in the ass - or on this occasion the shin. He was not healthy when he entered the Octagon - I would love to read the opinion of a doctor that disagrees with me.

Have I made myself clear now? Cause Einstein said if you can't explain it to a seven year old, then you don't understand it yourself. So I'm willing to keep trying.

Unless you know something I don't. Always willing to be educated.

I know what weight cutting is, but thanks.

Unhealthy according to who? You? Bottom line, Hill would not be able to "starve" himself all year while maintaining the intense training that he puts on his body. Hill is known for coming into his fights in excellent conditiong, and is able to maintain a strong pace through the entirety of a fight. That proves that he isn't starving himself AND that the weight class he competes in is healthy for him.

How can you make the argument that a weight a guy is able to maintain year-round, in the face of very intense training, is an unhealthy one for him?

Have I made myself clear now? Cause Einstein said if you can't explain it to a seven year old, then you don't understand it yourself. So I'm willing to keep trying.

You have made your point clearly...I just disagree

Corey's injury was a freak accident, and its one that can and will happen again. More comments above in RED

Fair enough. The guy who did it at Cage rage 4 was skinny too though.

The fact that it is a part of the sport and whether it should be part of the sport are two different things though. Measures should be taken to help assure it isn't. Otherwise there's not much point to weight classes.

But I agree, weight cutting probably didn't have anything to do with his broken leg. Shoot, if anything he probably decreased the likelihood of it happening a wee bit by enabling him to fight smaller fighters than he'd face at 170. lol

I agree with your general point Irish but most guys that cut weight don't do it year round. They do it only a week or so out (I know you pointed this out already). I figure Corey Hill probably did it this way as well. Is there some info he actually starved himself year round? A fighter doing that would definitely be an idiot.

Just his appearance. Calories in calories out.

You can't train at a high level of intensity (as in explosively), providing a stimulus for muscle growth, and not gain a certain amount of muscle mass...unless you are eating a low amount of calories.

Height weight/recommendations are generally slated because they don't allow for extra muscle mass - athletic guys generally hit the fat/obese end of the scale. Corey is well under the "healthy" recommendations.

I'd like to see his numbers in the Harris Benedict formula.

It was just bad luck. I've seen these happen before.

He has long legs, he hit with weakest part of his shin. The other guy checked it with the strongest part.

So you're speculating...

Yup. But it's not exactly a stab in the dark though.

Exactly. He made contact right above his ankle. Happened in K1 a few times I believe.

Yes, it is.

Your shin (mine as well) would have broken with that type of shot.

Entirely possible, but if you measured his bone density I reckon it'll still be below average for an athlete.

I can burn 4000 calories pretty easy doing MMA workouts. It is not hard to not eat enough. At that level you think your coach would let you know that so you have some bone mass to speak of.
