Obtaining a tire for sledgehammer drills
I thought I'd post here since, as I understand it, sledgehammer drills are quite popular for martial arts conditioning. I was just curious about some stuff I've read on getting old tires free from dealers. Is it really that simple? Do you just walk in and ask if they have an old tire you can take off their hands?

Call around some truck yards. I found one that hauled cranes and I got a big tire, but they had some that were so big I wouldn't even know what to do with them. I got it for free... Just had to haul it off myself. I cleaned it and glazed it though. A new tire like that would cost you a few grand!

Are you anywhere near a farming community? Farmers always have tires.
The sledgehammer training brings back memories. My dad's child-rearing philosophy was "If you're fighting you clearly don't have enough to do, therefore I will give you something to do." He would then invent evil chores to occupy us. One was breaking sandstone with a sledgehammer. He certainly made his point.

The best I've found for personal use is a large forklift tire. It's about 30" in diameter, about 12" wide and very sturdy. Best of all it's small enough that it doesn't bring down property values.

i don't recommend this way, but this is how i got my tire
i went out drinking, got pretty drunk, walked by a gas station/repair shop that happened to have tires outside...i walked over, knocked over the pile of tires, found one i liked and rolled it back home.
i could have went up and asked them during the day and they would have giving me one because they are the tires they were getting rid of.

It really is that simple. Some shops may not let you have one of their used tires, but I haven't ran across one. A lot of them have to pay to have someone come take them away so they're not going to care if you want to take a few. There's a tire shop my buddy works at that keeps the old used ones outside on the side of the building 24 hours a day. They really couldn't care less if someone wants to take them.

Who needs a tire if you have sand?
I was training a client on the beach this morning and another guy had brought a sledgehammer down and was hitting the sand.
Sure the tourists probably thought he was a nut, but ripped to shreds nut - but combine that with rope climbs, rings, and sprints in the sand and you've got yourself a pretty brutal session.

i've hit the sand before too. its fun. makes it much easier to get down and back - less to carry - more time for training

If only...
Anyway, as I drove by the tire dealer that's on my way home, sure enough I spied a big stack of tires out back of the building. I'm assuming it's their junk pile. So I'm going to stop in tomorrow and see about snagging one.
